What is a dip?

What does a dip consist of? What's the difference in a bad dip and a good dip and how do you tell a coin has been dipped? Why would I want to dip a coin?
Coins, shiny coins!

and it sets us apart from practitioners and consultants. Gregor
Copper does not suffer dipping very well. In the first half of the 20th century it was de riguer to clean copper coins, and one finds many examples of IHC's and Large cents with a strange orange color. Silver can actually look quite "normal" after a dip, if it's done correctly.
Gold is basically inert, which is not to say that it doesn't get dipped. But sadly, I've seen more "whizzed" gold coins than dipped ones.
We ARE watching you.

You're supposed to use washing soda, not baking soda.
