Heritage Alert: SP's Hazardous to Mental Health

What the heck is up with Topps - I have a scazillion doubles - the short prints are KILLING me - don't even have all the commons yet!! - so I committed this obsession to words: hope you guys like this little ode - if anyone is feeling my pain, I didn't start this, I think JoeStalin did!!

Heritage SP Card Blues

With stacks o’ packs and buckets o’ gum
Ran outta money, was a tidy sum.
Been working all night, that ain’t no sport
I can’t believe… still 30 cards short!

I demand a recount! With a loud retort,
I can’t believe, now 40 cards short!
My wife’s pissed off… must be bad news,
40 cards short, Got SP card blues.

Runnin’ round like a madman,
I’m on the attack.
Eyes trained on 2 retails and
A box of loose packs.
forgot my wallet…no cash…bad news,
40 cards short…got SP card blues.

I’m bent on finishin,’ I can’t be denied
Attention board members, come To my side.
If we trade our SP’s, I know we can’t lose,
40 cards short…got SP card blues…
40 cards short…got SP card blues

edit: hey guys, the important thing here is: look at ALL the fun I'm havin'!?!?!?!?!?!

Exactly the reason I am staying away from new stuff with cards that are specifically short printed...learned my lesson last year when I tried to make a set of UD vintage..........

edited to say: that has since dropped in value by 50% or more

    GOOD LUCK THOUGH

The only "problem" per se I have with it is why make "2" cards? A "regular" card and a SP card. A complete set is cards 1-100 in sequence. Not 1-100 to include SPs with the same numbers. Why not just make them inserts? It boggles my mind, course I did pick up one box and would have picked up more but couldnt find any... image

yeah this can get frustrating, but in a month or so you are flipping through youe set, remember how
you got your first coco crisp or Burrell old logo it will be well worth it! Im here to say that I will send for
free anyone who needs non-sp's, so no one here should worry about those and I think there are
enough people here that trades will really help. Just as long as someone pulls an extra freaking
    todd helton purple jersey !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really don't think it exists! LOL

Brent....you may be the first to complete your set as I have all the cards you need. Let work out
a deal and maybe I can get them out tomorrow.

    Lets get trading!

    Hey....Brent
You come on my pity thread all bragging - where's the sympathy? The support? Feel my pain...image
Just messin' - I'm glad you are that close - are you going to put the set in a binder, sell it or what?
Has anyone declared they are done? I wouldn't be surprised if John Basilone is finished - the guy is lightening in a bottle - he doesn't mess around.

  • Hey Mike,

You are partially to blame for this, and thank you so much. I think I am going to put it in a binder and look at it, maybe keep it under my pillow at night, lol. I am going to hold onto it unless I get blown away with an offer, which I would not expect. This is the first set I have put together since the 1989 Score set.

I am toying with the Chrome set but am not completely committed to the idea. Too much money in all likelihood.

    Thanks for the help,

I have the Helton sp (only one of them)
but have never even seen the Burrell!

(plus I had the NEW logo listed as the SP
on the list that Basilone posted here... Link.)

If you really want brain damage, try placing a 75% complete set into sleeves using a list of SPs you're missing, crossreferenced with SPs you have, and base cards you are missing, also with indications as to which SPs have dual versions and which are singles. I did that Saturday night (I know how to live), and of course I ended up 1 card off at the last sheet. Also naturally, the card I misplaced was back on the fourth page, so I had to reshuffle 51 pages. Oy.

The Chromes seem extra pretty this year, what with the bright, primary candy colors and textured backgrounds, as opposed to last year's 70s designer colors and dull, plain backgrounds. A set should be easy to do and probably cheaper than a complete regular set, with only 110 cards in the set, 3-4 per hobby box and large lots for sale on ebay. I've pulled 14 or 15 from 6 retail boxes and a few packs, and have been trying to decide if I want to keep going or dump them. I still haven't completed the 2001 Heritage Chrome set, four times harder, but I don't want to be here in 2007 trying to complete this set.
    WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Nothing on ebay

that was a typo from Beckett.

I can relate to your set woes. It does seem like you always forget about one card in a 500 card set
and of course it couldn't be card 489 no but card 89! I usually check real carefully now when I put
mine in binders. This years set fits real nice in a 2 inch binder, I start over when I get to the short
prints, just so I know where they are. Its nice to hear the same stories from set builders! LOL

As far as the chromes they do look nice this year. I attempted the set last year but are 10 cards
short. I have a stack this year but am trading them to one guy, so I probably won't do a set this
year even though if I buy as much as I did last year then I will probably have a bunch. It really
seems like there is less retail out this year than last.

    Good Luck

It is a great set - it appeals to both modern and vintage people - altho a pain - the SP's add interest - notice with the Chipper jones card, the nickname is not on both cards - once it's together, then I start reading and looking - I was the first in group to notice the reverse negative on a Ripken insert in 92 - Ya Gotta Love it! By the way, one time I was off by one card and I would have had to shift a mess of cards - placed a picture of my pet cat instead! Just jokin' Thanx for your PM Kevin.

  • retail's everywhere where i am. i'd buy more but unfortunately the gum (it's why I remained loyal to Topps) doesn't taste the same- some sugarfree "fake" gum this year. not to mention there are far too many sps to collect- but i do love the cards. for some reason, the "real" gum is in Bowman Heritage rather than Topps.

    Kevin:

Is this really that hard -- a 5-second search on Ebay finds a Helton purple jersey for $2-

    here
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

actually - there are six of them on ebay, and I think the $2- was the highest price. Seems like a deal to pick up that last toughie you need...?!

schmidt...yeah Im sure that I am overreacting, but when you pull 5 of one guy and none of the other...well
    you get a bit parnoid!

Stone...Nice catch on the chipper! Have you noticed that some of the logo variations are also
colored differently? Frank Thomas and Pat Burrell are two examples...hmmm they are close together
in the set too. I think everyone figured out the Nomar oddity on the back...Im sure there are others,
I can't wait to sit down with my complete set and look at these.

I just picked up 8 packs and pulled my last TN.
