Half Grade Price Differentials

Perhaps this is the wrong place to ask this question but I know you guys are avid card buyers and are aware of the graded card marketplace for the years you collect.

My question is whether SGC graded cards, both commons and stars, which are 8 1/2's typically trade over the PSA 8 price in 1960's issues? (particularly 1963).

Thanks for any info you can give me.

No, I have yet to see any SGC card trade over its PSA counterpart. A SGC 7.5 may even trade lower then a Psa 7 The half grade thingy seems to never cross up.....my opinion

Im sorry I used 7 not 8 like your equested in your question.....at that point im not sure if a 8.5 would become a 9 i doubt it though. The half grades are good in some ways bad in others.

SGC pricing is a little strange when it comes to the half grades.

I just sold some at the Fort last week, and all of the dealers wanted to devalue the price difference by about 15 to 25%.

Example: If the PSA 7 is $100 and the PSA 8 is $200 .... then the SGC 7.5 should be $150. Most of the dealers wanted to call the book value about $125.

As for the SGC 92's selling for more than the PSA 8's.... I'd say on average they go for less or about the same price, but it seems to mostly depends on the individual card... if PSA collectors think it has a chance of crossing to a PSA 9 it could go higher. If it looks like an 8 or is off center, it will go lower.

Paul (Starx cards) told me that he thought gai 8.5's from the 63 topps in stars and semi stars definitely brought a premium verses psa 8's. He had a lot of high grade 63's last year and I asked him why several were graded by gai and that is the reason he gave.

sb10 has it right if a card is a 92 because of centering it probably won't sell for a premium. this is were i think the half grade fails. centering should always be a qualifier and in most cases you would truely get a high grade 7 or 8 and not a mint card that is off centered.

Joe - For basketball and hockey from the 1960's SGC and GAI cards in 7.5 and 8.5 usually sell for less than a PSA 7 or 8 equivalent.
However, for baseball, the star cards sell for a nice premium in 7.5 or 8.5, especially in the major auctions. SGC 8.5's will consistently outsell PSA 8's for star cards. Commons, however, are a different story and will probably sell for slightly less than the PSA 8 equivalent.

the only Gai card I own is a 55 Topps and come to think of it I did pay a slight Premium for it over a PSA7 I think it ended at 130.00

I do not follow SGC or GAI cards on everything, but I do occasionally see what is listed for 1967, Rose and Mantle cards. I do see a price difference in the half grade. Once the GAI is registry is up, if ever, there could be a nice selection of cards to be had.

GAI cards do sometimes command a premium in the same way that "high end" PSA cards do for their grade. Why do you think PSA (allegedly) floated the half-point grading idea last year?
