Oh no ....

After purchasing my 1913 british gold soverign, I realized I need a magnifying glass of some sort.

The date is to damn small.

I asked my mom to get one, and she got one for me, i was pretty shocked. (I didn't have to pay for it, it was a gift from her)

It was lighted too! Unfortunately, as I hated to say to her as she worked hard to get it, it really sucks.

Its a pop up magnifyer lens, the lens is plastic, and it lights up too, well at least it used to. After using it for 2 days it stopped lighting up. I barely even used it.

On the back it says, "Made in China", heh, no wonder.

After finding what company made it, "Ultra-Optix" I found their website, and found out it really was what I feared .. 2x. Ewww..

It barely made a difference to tell the date on my coin, it in fact seemed to make it harder because the lens is so small.

I still have yet to see if my coin is 1918 or 1913. I went to another website with more powerful loupes and it recommended a 20x loupe for the job of coins ... ouch. No wonder mine didn't have that much of an effect.

I hate ordering off the internet though, its a pain and shipping takes forever. Plus the cost of insurance, etc.. and the dreaded pink slip I get all the time.

So I went to a sporting store, hoping they'd have a some type of better magnifying glass; they didn't have one.

I just doubt I can find any at any real place besides off the internet, walmart doesn't have good ones either. I'll have to find some science store ..

Also if your curious on how it looks, or if you want to buy it for some reason, (I don't recommend it!)http://www.ultraoptix.com/Pages/Lighted Magnifiers.html . (Look at model A)

If you have a good scanner or a digital camera, that can serve as a pretty good magnifier.

I use a 15X jeweller's loupe. If you could go with your Mom to check out jewelry, you could borrow the jeweller's loupe and look at your coin. They are mostly 10X but they would be more than ample. image

  • Bookstores may also offer magnifiers that are above average in power.
