Good day for coins in the mail

I was surprised today to receive a coin that I bought in the Heritage auction on Tuesday, March 9th. I've never had such fast delivery from a major auction firm. It's an 1877-P $20 Liberty in MS61 for my gold type set. I know I could have bought a common date in MS63 for less, and had a higher GPA in my set, but I'd rather have a better date. According to the January Population Report, this coin is in the top 104 for the date, whereas the common 1904-P has a pop of 47,035 in MS63 or better.

I also received bags of 2004-P nickels and mixed 2004-P & D halves. After reading the comments from other board members regarding the quality of these coins, I wasn't expecting much, but they are better than I thought they would be. I photographed the first of each coin I pulled out of the bags to photograph.

Jefferson has a few nicks on his face and coat on this coin, and there are 3 nicks on the hands on the reverse. Some of the others from the bag are in better shape.

The halves had nice luster, and seem to be better than a lot of coins I've seen in mint sets in recent years.

I have examined more of the coins since taking these pictures, and believe there are definitely some that are worth having certified.

  • Hey Jim,

Nice score on the gold piece.
I've found Heritage pretty quick on delivery lately also. I answer their e-mailed invoice the following morning (wed.) and have recieved the coin as quick as Sat.

Good luck on the moderns. I think someone mentioned that they thought the bags were a better source for gems.

Again, nice score on the gold. I'd rather have a "pop-top" , 'cuse me, I mean "Top-Pop", any day! image
