Question About Submitting Vintage 10's

This has probably been asked before , so forgive me if I'm rehashing a old subject ! When submitting Vintage cards to Psa for grading , how do all of you put a dollar amount on cards that you feel or hope might be 10's.......for the purpose of determining the total value of your submission ? I know the SMR ONLY LISTS prices for Psa 9 , and in its description of Vintage 10's ,says the price of a 10 could be 2x to 5x or higher of the value of a Psa 9 .............do you just list the Psa 9 value for your card and hope that the grader gives you a 10 , or do you let the grader know that you feel that you have a 10 card that you are submitting ! I guess what I'm really getting at , is submitting your card at a psa 9 price , are you telling the grader that you don't think its worthy of a 10 and your just hoping that he gives you a 9 , or is it understood that your card could still be worthy of a 10............. hmmmmmmmmm great question I was wondering that too, all my possible tens that are sitting in my collection gathering dust. anyone have the answer for us?? image
    Good for you.
  • i'm not sure if the grader see's the actual invoice or pays attention to declared value. lately i've been submitting a lot of 70's material so i declare each card for 10 bucks. i think putting all those 10's in the far right box may send a subliminal message to the grader.

but it's only worked for 1 of every 100 cards. image

seriously, i don't think it matters.

I believe you are supposed to use the SMR guide for a PSA 8, as the value, for any submission.

This aint no party,... this aint no disco,.. this aint no fooling around.
  • The value you list is for the amount you want it insured for. There is no sense in assigning a high dollar amount as all it does is increase your shipping costs. Just list the amount it would take to replace the card if it were to get lost/damaged in the mail.

  • I agree with Robert...however...what if you honestly thought that your card was a 7...and you insured it appropriately as 7...and it was lost or destroyed...then you made your claim...however PSA graded the card a 5...what do you suppose the insurance company would pay you at your 7 or the 5 rate?

Let's say that you paid the price for a 7...maybe even still had your receipt...then what...

I have plenty of questions...no answers...at the moment...

Robert is correct, it just changes the amount you pay for shipping. I'll give you examples of several of my recent submissions to show you how I do it:

    Submission #1

Current Set Registry Special - $10 per card/5 day turnaround

I submitted 40 cards. Instead of using the submission form, I have been using a spreadsheet that I attach to the submission. I use the same columns that are found on the PSA submission form. In the "value" column on this particular submission, I entered values that I thought the cards were worth (raw in high grade). The total came to somewhere around $1,100. On the shipping rate chart, the difference between a declared value of $1000 and a declared value of $1001-$5000 is $4.50. Since I was close to the low end, I made a few adjustments in the spreadsheet and got my total declared value to $995.

    Submission #2

Previous Set Registry Special - $5 per card/ 35 day turnaround

I submitted 145 cards. Again, my spreadsheet totaled my declared value. Since most of these cards were less valuable, I just declared a value of $5 for almost every card on the submission. A few of the earlier '70s cards were higher, but my total fell easily between the $501-$1000 range for shipping. So, no adjustment was necessary.

That's how I look at assigning values to cards. Hope it helps.

Thanks for the answers , really appreciate the input ! I've made about four or five submissions now , and it always concerned me about putting down my declared value ! .............Jeb....... I,ve kind of done what you suggested about keeping the declared value under a certain amount to avoid the higher shipping rate , but I just substituted a lower $ card to replace a higher one to get under the cap ! Just want to say thou , I'm just wishing and dreaming of ever getting a Vintage 10 from the Grader of Death !...........Dave 'Robby' Robinson

For what it's worth; I think I recall that the 1999 submission instructions stated somewhere to use the PSA 8 value of a card for shipping cost purposes - I notice that direction is not on the submission info anymore, but isn't that still the rule of thumb? Nonetheless, this thread is important because it raises a very valid concern.
