1891 $20 Gold - Mint Mark Question

Is it common for a mint mark to be "filled" like this? Or is it something else? Thanks!

Doesn't seem too out of the ordinary to see blobby S's now & then, your best bet is to look up same date in Heritage's auction archives, coinfacts.com, etc. and compare.

Further, in checking the mintages, a removed mintmark would be the worry on an 1891 - not an addition.
  • All three of the current ones on Heritage are not like that. And coinfact's example is not like this either.
