Grade the Morgan if you want

Really this could be two questions. What should this Morgan grade? and What grade is on the label?

No higher than MS65. The contact marks on the neck will prevent it from going higher. Otherwise, a very nice looking coin.

In answer to what grade is on the ANACS label, I would guess 66PL.

    66 pl
    That's my guess

I'll say 65 tops due to the bag marks on the face and possibly PL or DMPL. Nice cameo contrast and the periph tone gives it a nice "look."
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

Carl: It's a very nice 84-O -- they are tougher than one would think in Gem PL/DMPL grade.

The coin looks to me like a solid MS-65 PL with Cameo contrast, and with a shot at MS-66 and perhaps DMPL (reflectivity is very difficult to discern from the photo provided)...

Guess thats why I scored so poorly in the PCGS grading contest. I was thinking MS64 DMPL.

Man Carl, there sure are some grumpy graders here huh? I'd say this is what 65's used to look like and still should. But I've seen coins that look like this one in 66 and even 67 holders these days with more marks than this one has.

I like the "Look" of this one and would like to see a ms65 and probably PL as well.

  • Thanks for the comments. I really like the look of this Morgan too. At one point a few years ago I bought several ANACS DMPL Morgans sight unseen. They were very different looking. This one was head and shoulders above the others. It is graded MS 65 DMPL. I'm OK with the 65 but the fields are not deeply mirrored. This is OK with me too as I prefer PL Morgans to DMPL. I really like the frosty devices. I've kept two Morgans for my personal collection and this one is my favorite.

MS64 DMPL should be the grade. AU58 is on the label.

MS65DMPL. Nice coin and so for the label? I dunno... MS64 PL and it was one of those coins that was submitted when it was a considered Liberal to give out a DMPL grade.

    Carl,

Glad you kept it. It's one of those coins that would surely be dipped thinking the mirrors would improve, but lots of the eye appeal IS the toning. She's a beauty, and I like your grade assessment.

My guess was/is 65dmpl in an first gen ngc holder (from the rim toning.)

After reading your reply, you mention 2 keeper coins. what is the other.

The coin is very nice, good pickup for sight unseen.
