Question on the strike thru????????

What is a stike thru, and how does that happen? I found a wheat penny that has what I thought was a nasty scratch but noticed that it went under the date and thought that was weird, but just blew it off as a nasty scratch. Are they worth more or just a freak thing that doesn't mean anything?

A strike thru is just like what it sounds like. Something got between the planchet and the die as the coin was being struck. Sometimes the strike thru item remains, but most of the time it leaves an impression. As for your particular piece, it sounds like it could be a strike thru or die gouge. Depending on size and severity.

Do a search--- strike through -- and then try-- strike thru ---and you will see some nice examples.

  • Thanks ! Do you know if they are worth more? I guess what I need to know is that, is it worth my time to go back through the 300 wheaties I just went through yeasterday, (cherry picking through the wheatie mountain), to find that little bugger? LOL

Strike thrughs are minor errors and not worth much unless they are really spectacular.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

Tom, that IKE is very sweet. I have a couple of nice struck thru IKEs, but they don't look like that. Very nice.
