PCGS has finally opened up the 1892 proof set for the registry and my set is now listed. I haven't yet figured out how to post the pics on the registry site but here are the images of each. They are prettier than the pictures.

As a type collector, that is awesome. Now if you could go back in time a bit and get a Seated Liberty proof set, wouldn't that be an awesome extension?

WOW - To have that many high quality coins in an original set is amazing. Great pedigree too. A keeper!

Windycity: Can you tell us a bit more of the history of the set? Such as, did the mint have a large display at the 1892 Columbian Expo? Do you know who purchased the set from the mint and/or more of its history? But, even without more history, that is a simply an awe inspiring set of coins!

That is one sweet set..........too bad Barber had no imagination and made all his coins look the same.

I can not "paper" the set to the Columbian Expo but when I have more time on my hands I will begin to research it in more detail. Here's the story as I believe to be true...
It is believed this set was hand-picked for display at the 1892 Columbian Exposition in Chicago. While it is documented that the US Mint had a display booth at the Expo, there is no firm evidence, other than the spectacular coins within the set, that the set was a part of their display. After the Expo, the set resided with one Chicago family (family does not want name used) for more than 100 years until it was sold to dealer Harlan J. Berk, Ltd. in 1993. That same year, Harlan J. Berk, Ltd. sold the set to a Chicago collector who sold it back to the dealer in early 2003. I bought the set in March, 2003.
As I said in the earlier post, the coins are prettier than the pictures.

And Barber coins are pretty to me !!!

Oh yeah, the rest of the coins weren't bad either.
Thanks to Windycity for sharing it again!!!

<< <i>The dime is a matter of taste. For those that like toning, it is stunning. For those that like white and sharp cameo contrast, the other coins are nicer. I had a very experienced pro suggest that I dip the dime... would never touch any of the coins. They are all stunning. >>
I'm not a fan of toning, but I like the dime.
