What's a good trade percentage?

When you trade (or sell) graded cards to a dealer, what percentage of card value do you consider to be a fair deal?

I realize every trade is different and can have all types of intangibles ..... but assuming the cards are being priced appropriately (on both ends), what's the flat percentage rate you try to get for your cards when trading with a dealer?

if im the dealer id like to pay 50% if im the seller id like to get 75%

so.............62.5% of FMV would be fair to all those involved, only prob is a dealer (brick n mortar) wants to get material as cheaply as possible, for obvious reasons, rent etc. and the seller wants to maximise profits. In the final anyalis (spelling) buy and trade cards w/o worry as to money for the love of it and in most cases you will come out ahead. in more ways then expected

I figure about 15% less than what I can get on ebay. It's pretty easy to list items, and dealers can get higher than ebay prices, so there is some room for profit. I've been pretty happy trading with a few select dealers as they will give me a bit better deal on stuff I'm going to buy anyway, so it makes it easy. But the days of being lowballed by the corner card shop are gone, thanks to Ebay.

  • Recently I made large lot acquisitions which involved buying PSA 8's when I already had the same cards in PSA 7. This left me with a large number of 7's I really didn't need. On both occasions I discussed this very question with a dealer friend, who encouraged me to buy the cards in the large lots and sell my existing PSA 7 duplicates on eBay rather than take 50-60% on trade in value.

I did this on a 1957 BB set and ended up selling 22 of those PSA 7's for full SMR. The trouble of listing them on eBay made it much more worthwhile than the figures offered me on trade-in value on the original deal. Of course it would have been much easier doing the trade in, but the additional hassle of going through eBay was rewarded in the end.
