What do you think?

Since I was worried my british gold soverign (date 1913 or 1918) was fake, I did what that one person on these boards said, to get a eletronic scale and weigh it. I went to a chemist teacher at school and she had a eletronic scale. She said she didn't know how accurate it was, and she told me it rounds it slightly (to the nearest tenth I think she said)
Remember the coin is a british gold soverign, date 1918 (or 1913).The coin is also in BU condition.
Here's what I found:
Weight in grams: 8.0
Weight in ounces: 0.28
Is this what it should weigh for a geniune british gold soverign of this date range?
Thanks

The date on mine is either 1918 or 1913. Its hard to tell whether its a 8 or 3. It has no mint mark. Did they make 1918 and 1913's with no mint marks and are they very rare?
thanks
edited to add: My bad, looks like there were no 1918 London minted sovereigns after all, so your sovereign should be a 1913.

...I think you've got about $90 worth of gold.

<< <i>If the coin is truly BU you should be able to make out the date? Sounds genuine in any case.
The coin is in great condition, its just the date is so small and its extremely hard to see if the 3 is an 8. If you shine the light on the 3 it looks like an 8, then again the 8 looks like a fancy 3. I even used a magnifying glass, I still can't figure it out.
I'm pretty sure the date is normal size, just damn, that 3 is hard to tell from the 8 (since its so small).
I guess I'm going to have to buy a microscope, heh. Or a powerful loupe, the one I have is 2x I think.

<< <i>I can see that, how many people with a 1923 Peace Dollar think they have a 1928, a good many! >>
Are you being sarcastic? Unlike the peace dollar,The 1911-1935 dates on the 1/4 oz gold soverigns is very small. Most of the numbers are easy to read but the 8 from a 3 isn't. The top and bottom end of the 3 curve like an 8, it looks more like an ornate 3. I checked it with my 2x magnifying glass and it looks like a 3, although I'm not postitive.

Canada minted 1913 + 1918 Sovereigns. Once you get a more powerful loupe, check for a mint mark (C for Canada) on the ground underneath the dragon on the reverse. The 1913C is rare, the 1918C is common.
A quick check in Krause reveals that Austrailia (mint marks S, M, or P) also issued Sovereigns dated 1913 + 1918, all common.

Not at all, at least not in this case! The 3 on 1923 Peace Dollars looks very much like an 8 at a glance and if your eyes are strained from a long day of grading coins you sometimes have to take a second look.
