What do you suppose is going on here?

I was searching completed auctions to see what common MS63 and MS64 NGC and PCGS Morgans have been bringing on eBay. I came across this seller, who is routinely getting $50-60 for common 63s and $60-80 for common 64s. What do you think is going on?

30 Day seller list

  • I didn't dig too far into this, but he may just be a fortunate eBay seller. We have sold mint and proof sets for 30% over retail on many occassions through eBay. I can't explain it. He does list a lot of coins, which helps to drive traffic to all of his auctions. The prices are full retail and then some, but not completely unreasonable.

On the other hand, one of the high bidders on some of the coins that closed closer to bid was recently NARU'ed. Could it have been his shill account to drive the prices up??

I'm not sure, and I certainly don't want to accuse a seller of being a shill without solid proof. But most of his PCGS and NGC Morgans have gone far higher than any others, and his images aren't the best, and from what I can tell, these are your typical MS63 and MS64 Morgans.

I have to run to the PO, but when I have some more time I am going to dig into these auctions, something is missing here.

    << <i>but the NGC# on all 4 is the same. >>

No it isn't. They are all from the same submission, but the numbers are different.

As Russ pointed out, these are different coins, but something still smells here.

The location is where the item is, not the buyer.

You're right Russ, they are from the same submission but different coins.

Still, something smells here, no one else is getting that kind of money for common 63 and 64s.

Might simply be a case of a seller who takes good care of his customers and is bookmarked by a lot of bidders. More bookmarks = more traffic = higher realized prices. It's common on eBay for some sellers to consistently realize better money on their coins than average.

Two examples that come to mind are centsles and L&C Coins. Both do much better with moderns than the average eBay seller because both get a lot of traffic to their auctions.

Things aren't always as they appear.

There is another seller on eBay who sells SBA dollars. All the coins this person sells bring more than double, sometimes triple, what others seller's coins bring in. Can anyone explain that one?

Could be someone trying to drive up prices to bring more money into other auctions? Maybe?

Hmmm... seems to be a lot of editing here.

While I can understand some sellers who have items go above what other similar items go for, common, unremarkable MS63 and MS64 Morgans going for 50-70% over ask is quite strange. I don't know exactly what is going on here. But I do know he is getting far more than even sellers who sell more than he does.
