Advice for starting 1975 topps set

I've been out of collecting for a little while, but wanted to get back into it by building the 1975 topps baseball set since that is the year I was born.
Thought it would be cool to have all the cards PSA graded 8 (or above, but starting with 8 would be fine).
Was hoping to get some advice from the other members here on how I should go about this.
My two thoughts were:
1) buy a NrMT set (one compiled through vending most likely) and then send it cards to PSA hoping to get mostly 8's, but also some 9's, maybe a 10 or two.
2) buy PSA 8 1975 topps commons and minor stars in lots (though ebay, etc.), and then buy the individual star cards (yount, brett, ryan, etc.)
Having thought about it for a little while, I think that option #2 would be the best- not only becuase it will likely cost me less, but also becuase it will be a lot less work- don't have all that much time as a medical student.
Any and all advice would be great.
Lastly, a little story.......(only becuase I find collecting a set whose top card is George Brett a little ironic for me)
I was about 14 and down in Baseball City with my father going to a Royals spring training game. I used to like to wander around the stadium after the games looking for players, etc. Well, I came across this gathering with a bunch of players, and some other people- buisnessmen, etc? There was free food, drinks, and also the opportunity to get some autographs. I remember getting some players autographs, and then I saw George Brett. I went up to him to ask for his signature, and he turns to me and says, "Son, are you supposed to be in here.....I'm not sure you are.....so I think you need to leave." Not wanting to get into trouble, I left and found my father outside. I told him about what had happened, were the little get-together was, and asked him to go get the autograph for me (he always wore a tie to all game, so I knew he would fit in). Anyhow, he went and got the autograph. When he returned, I was still upset about what Brett has said to me, so I took the signed ball from my dad, when back into the gathering, found Mr. Brett and yelled to him, "HEY GEORGE, you're a jerk, but I got your autograph anyways!" I then proceeded to sprint out of the stadium, never looking back, fearful that I might be chased by the entire Royal's team....ahh, to be young again.

Good Luck with the set!
Welcome to the boards. I have a complete NM+ 1975 set if you're interested.
The Brett and Yount look like NM 7's but I just recently pulled the Bench and
Steve Carlton cards for grading and both came back NM-MT 8. I would also
say there are many MINT 9 cards in this set.
Good luck with your efforts. 1975 is an awesome set.

Collecting 1970-1979 PSA 9 & 10 Baseball Cards
Thus, if anyone has PSA 8's NQ from 75 topps that they are looking to move, email me.
Larry, I dropped you a line- thanks!
Thanks,
Doug
looking forward to getting rolling with this set.
I concur on the by the cards already slabbed. You can take them in $ sizes that are easier than a whole set at a time and big lumps of grading fees.
There is no doubt that Brett is a darned tough auto and even harder on the press. Having grown up in KC and met Brett on numerous occasions, I wanted to share the other story. I was with two friends walking through a mall in KC when I look up and see George coming at us shades, hat and all to not be noticed. I had met him before and while he would not have remembered me from Adam, I do have some distinctive features that he might have remembered. As we passed, I quietly said "Hey George, how's the golf game?". He turned on a dime, shook my hand, acted like we were old buddies and told us golf stories for about 15 minutes. I didn't believe that anything he said was really true but he was friendly and it did impress the heck out of the guys I was with. We didn't speak a word about BB and he was great. Nobody asked him for an autograph. In fact, I prefered the time anyway.
Almost as good as the time I got spit on by Dennis Leonard (another 75 card).

Like that big bag of 1966 Topps cards stapled to your forehead?
Mike
75 's are one of my favorite 70's sets, by the end of the year i intend to pursue them again. i want to finish or at least be 85+ % complete with the 72's before i jump back into the 75's.
one more bit of advice, look out for larger lots of 75's in psa 8 it's a great way to build a base and save on shipping. i suspect with the last PSA grading special you will see more than a few in the coming months.
good luck and enjoy.
I no longer have the big bag of 66's stapled too my forehead.
I now have two big bags and wear them saddle bag style on the sides of my head.
Good jab though.
