My wife wants to start collecting Canadian, any suggestions?

I Collect U.S. coins and currency. My wife has caught the bug to collect, saw some Canadian Coins depicting various forms of wildlife. She's an animal lover (to the tune of about 200.00 per month in maintainenceimage) and I seem to think I've seen an awful lot of Canadian coins with animals. Can anybody suggest a series, a book, etc, to help get her off on the right foot?

How about the 1967 Canadian centennial coins? They each have a different animal on the reverse, and they're really cool looking. You can get a pretty nice example of each coin without breaking the bank, either, which is nice.

  • Most of the animal series are on the NCLT modern mint junk. Its a waste of money in my opinion, but if you do decide to buy, don't pay issue prices, as they almost always decrease in value

I say start her off with the Canadian Coin Book. It's name escapes me at the moment. This way she can look through all the pictures and find stuff she likes.

  • A great reference book is Coins of Canada by J.A. Haxby and R.C. Willey.

As for animal coins go with the Discovering Nature Series (50 cent sterling silver proof coins) minted from 1995 - 2000 four coins per year. I have attached a couple of photos.

Looka t the tail in on the wolf coin. Doesn't it look like a portrait of Santa Clause, or perhaps twodogs?

  • Just a suggestion but I've always thought it would be neat to pick a particular animal and collect as many coins as possible from all countries depicting that particular animal.

What types of animals does your wife have?

If she's married to a "MadMonk", I'd assume she has at least one monkey. image
