'92D, '98, '99, '00 wide & close cents

I notice on the ngc census for these four years and mintmarks there are three catagories. plain, wide am and close am. Are the plain ones with neither a close or wide designation coins that were graded before the varietie was recognized? Joe

I think the plain ones would be the normal issue for the said year. Could be that those coins were graded prior to the designation. Someone may correct me if I am wrong.

I'd be willing to bet that the "plain" designation is their answer for cents that were slabbed before the discovery of the types, and/or slabs where a designation of one or the other was not asked for, thus they don't have record of which it was.
