Am I missing something?

Hi,

Okay, I am on a search for a nice 82 Walter Payton PSA 9. So I do a search on MSN and find a couple of sites - The FootballCardStore (I have seen them post here) and CoopbcVintageGradedCards. Here are the links:

http://www.thefootballcardstore.com/

How can one site be selling it for $329.99 and one for $40? Is there something I am missing here? Also, any other recommendations other than E-bay for graded football vintage?

simple reality of supply and demand, plus the luxury of having an affluent and aggressive customer base. i didn't even have to look at the links to know the footballcardstore's was the more expensive one. but when you specialize in the finest examples of anything you can be more aggressive in pricing and will bring bigger players to the table....ultimately ebay is the great equalizer. if you're patient it's typically the best price around. my attention was quickly caught by the footballcardstore's psa 4 landry rookie for 300...there's a 7 on ebay at 380. even though it's a tough card to find....5's usually only sell on ebay in the 250 range. vintage football is typically difficult to find at good prices off ebay. all i've bought over the past 2 years has been vintage football, and the only other place i've found good prices has been from other registry people.

    WRONG!

    http://mywebpages.comcast.net/awright150/websitePSA.htm#1982payton = $329.00

    http://www.thefootballcardstore.com/ = $40

and they are BOTH for PSA 9 versions of the same card...
(I have to admit, that IS a little weird!)

  • BKAH,

Thanks for the linkage - you are right. Actually, I found TheFootballCardStore's price to be reasonable. Last time I checked this card was $30 in the SMR. Is that still true? Being that it is Walter Payton....I don't find $40 to be a bad price at all. Just wondering how the other guys can ask 8X as much for what appears to me to be the same card and think that it will sell.

Many of the prices on the dealer sites are comical however they do provide a source if you
are impulsive and just have to have the card NOW.

A couple of months ago I plugged dealer pricing into my vintage Packers spreadsheet and
found that the sample group of cards purchased on Ebay for $4,232.54 would have cost me
$11200.32 if I would have purchased them from dealers (Mint State, FBC Store, Nearmint).

Almost 200%! I do troll dealer sites because occasionly a listing wont follow the standard
%500 mark-up. However I do notice that many of these cards languish on there site's unsold until they finally Ebay them and true
    market reality takes hold.

Ebay affords the collector choice and patience.

I don't know that coopbc guy, but his prices are all over the place. Some are 10x market value, but at least one is listed for less than I recently paid on eBay.

What are you smoking, coopbc? And, please share it with the rest of us!

Carew4me makes great points, and I had much the same comments after seeing graded card dealers at the Fort last weekend. I really don't know who these guys are fooling with those silly prices, but I wish the people buying them (if any) would take their money down to my business once in a while!

  • it's supply and demand. it's how/why "bricks and mortar" card shops will charge you $150 for a hobby box when you can find the same box on EBay for $75-90. it's also the fact that some people (dealers and individuals) are "overly optimistic" (to put it kindly) about the true (i.e., it's not always the BV) value of a card. there's also the fact that some people will pay anything for a card. i know i'll put in a vigorous "chase" for cards of my favorite player (except now the rest of the world has hopped on to the maddux bandwagon, driving prices up the wazoo...if only i could turn back time 1 year).

The price difference on these 2 particular cards is quite amazing. I'm assuming that the Payton on the vintage graded site has been there for quite some time and does not reflect a big change in pop report.

I do have to admit that $40 for the 82 Payton PSA 9 is a very reasonable price. Personally I do buy from the football card store quite often for a few reasons. One is that I enjoy their service, they are the most top notch dealers I have ever dealt with and I've collected for 25 years. Another reason is that I can count on the card being high quality. How many of us have gotten 8's and 9's off of ebay and gotten them and thought that is terrible? Jeremy is very honest and I've had him tell me "it's a slider, I don't think you want it." The other thing is the ease of dealing with them. I love ebay but I don't always have time to search for things. Jeremy is the kind of dealer that will e-mail me to let me know if a card he thinks I'm interested in comes available. In my opinion I don't overpay at all. I might be able to get a card cheaper on ebay from time to time but with what I save in time, energy and aggravation I feel it's a wash. Granted if there was a card on anyone's site that was almost 10x the price on another site or even ebay I'd pass, I'm not foolish.

Am I the only one that will pay a few bucks more from time to time to deal with someone I enjoy and respect?

  • kid- i have and will continue to pay a few bucks extra to a dealer i trust. it's why i still frequent "old school" card shops now and then (well that and sometimes I MUST have wax NOW). sure it costs me a few $ more, but the card shop owners also give me rookie cards of my favorite players (maddux, mcgwire, and palmeiro) w/o charge, will hold products for me, and call me when my favorite cards come in. you can't get that kind of service on ebay, even from the "greatest" dealers.

however, a few bucks more isn't going to inspire me to spend $400 on a $40 card.

i agree with the kid....at times i will pay more just cuz I have had a good repore with a seller and like him/her.
    Good for you.
  • Some are 10x market value, but at least one is listed for less than I recently paid on eBay.

And I know which one you are talking aboutimage

I'm actually thinking about that card, but I have 2 other high dollar vintage cards in my sights, so I'm going to wait to see how they go.

  • Hey everyone,

Thanks for the feedback. I am glad to see that I am not the only one that thinks that is a little crazy. It appears that some dealers just don't have a realistic view of what there cards are worth. I do agree however with everyone who said they would pay a little extra to deal with someone that they like and trust. Thanks again.
