a warm thanks and question

I sincerly appreciate all your politeness to me when I first posted, (saying welcome, etc). And determination to help me and give me advice.

Also, I have a question.

I really like to gamble sometimes .. on ebay stuff like "grab bags" although I don't know what to do and need your advice.

On ebay if you put in "Gold" in the search box there is a seller who, according to him, puts 10 ancient coins in a bag(roman, greek, and other ancient coins), and sells them for 19.95 per bag. There's a catch, however, and this catch makes me want to get one:

He states that most coins are bronze, however, he says there are some silver ones and even gold coins. Customers have apparently stated on their feedback that they found gold ones. He says they're directly "from the dug" so you have to clean the coins before you can clearly see the images.

What do you think of this? And should I buy one? I just don't know if its a rip off or not.

Thanks.

Virtually all the advice I have read concerning the "gold found" hype auction items is to stay away from them.

Anyone with a positive experience regarding "gold found" is invited to comment.

  • Is it possible that some of these ancients may have a small trace of gold in the copper alloy? And thus, the seller is 'truthful' in his misleading statement?

Rule #1 on ebay - you usually get what you pay for - or less.

Most "gold" coin finds in those lots are actually orichalcum (brass) coins that amateurs mistake for gold. The other possibility is that the seller buys really mangled gold coins to salt his lots with and get the "GOLD FOUND" feedback so that the seller can charge 2 dollars per coin instead of 1 dollar.

    You pegged it. They're orichalcum.
  • CIVITAS nailed it.

Since gold does not corrode it is easily separated from the rest of the horde when it is dug out of the ground.
Buyers who say they have found gold are most likely wrong.
Granted I have purchased ancients in the past, but only for fancy, not out of an attempt to profit.

Personal experience - I have bought 3-4 of those lots (just for the heck of it since I don't collect ancients) - out of the 3-4 lots, there were maybe 3-4 coins worth keeping... I won't buy another of those lots again... image
