PayPal Alternatives

First, let me say that I've been using PayPal for years now, and have been quite satisfied with the service. However, there does seem to be a fair number of people who, for whatever reason, don't like PayPal. So -- what else is out there for online payments?

Here's a few to get the discussion rolling:

Western Union Auction Payments -- the service formerly known as BidPay. Sellers like it 'cause it doesn't cost them anything. Expensive for buyers for small and large transactions, but there's a sweet spot from about $50 to $200 where it's useful.

Yahoo! PayDirect -- I've had an account with them for about two years now, but have yet to deal with a seller who uses it.

PayingFast -- Someone else recommended these guys, and I signed up for an account. Their ongoing technical difficulties are not very reassuring.

C2it -- Dead Dead Deadski. C2it never did acknowledge my credit card, with their only suggested fix "get a Citibank card". Uh, no thanks.

BillPoint -- Dead Dead Deadski. The original eBay payments, but it was too convienent and easy to use, so it had to be killed.

Any others? Has anyone had any serious success with any online payment service besides PayPal?

  • Well ebay bought PayPal, so they couldn't really run a competing service (billpoint). There is also a billpointsucks.com with reasons not to like it lol.
I heard they were making a French version of Medal of Honor. I wonder how many hotkeys it'll have for "surrender."

Have you ever gotten that one to work? I've tried several times, and for the life of me I can never figure out how to actually send a payment, or how much it's going to cost me.

Also -- assuming I'm just being obtuse and the service actually does work -- is it available for non-US customers?

Actually haven't tried it. I signed up right after they started, but haven't had occasion to use the service.

The problem is to get buyers to use the other services.

With PayPal integrated so closely within eBay, I don't see how any other services can effectivley compete. Tough road to hoe...

I been with PayPal a long time and I signed up just to take credit cards so I take credit cards thru PayPal when I sell on eBay and don't whine & cry about it.
I've never tried to use any other payment service because I have enough bank accounts already without signing up for all those others I would probably never use anyway.
If I wanted to make a payment to somebody I could do it easily without PayPal anyway because I know how to make an e-check or online payment from my own bank but PayPal is just so much easier to do.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

Well there is always money orders and personal checks for those of us who don't mind going that route. It just feels like an extra kick in the nads when your item doesn't bring what you expect or you actually end up losing $$$ and then have to pay a freakin fee to get your money on top of it.

That sounded good, until I got to this part:

Pay Only When It’s Delivered – Make sure you get what you pay for. We will release your payment only when you get your merchandise.

Is there any mechanism in place to protect the seller from buyers claiming they didn't get their merchandise?

I had a buyer ask me to create an account at escrow.com, which I think e-bay recommends. Anyone have any stories or observations about that service? Thanks.

I think I'll (ttt) this one. I'd especially like to hear from the PayPal haters as to which online payment service they prefer.
