Opinions on this 83S Morgan

JRoccoJRocco Posts: 14,277 ✭✭✭✭✭
I got this coin about 35 years ago when I was only 10 years old and have just started to look into Morgan's after all these years. Its raw so if anyone can help me with its grading and offer an opinion if they think I should get it slabbed even though its not a high $ coin. Thanks in advance.

Looks AU from the picture, but the color makes me wonder if you ever cleaned it. If not, then it might be worth slabbing.

I don't think it has been cleaned, but I might be wrong. Here are 2 more scans under fluorescent lighting.

With the look of it, I'm thinking AU-50 to AU-55. With a decent chance of having been cleaned once.

I agree with the majority. AU50/3/5 cleaned.

Looks to me to be AU50 or 53. I can't really tell from the images if it has been cleaned.

    XF45
    When in doubt, don't.

Dennis, there would have to be some wear on the eagle's right wing to take this down into XF. I don't see any.

I think PCGS will BB it for the scratch on the cheek, otherwise AU50 if not cleaned too harshly

    K6AZ:

The combination of not enough partial breast feather detail except around the extreme edges, plus my repeated experience with "I think this is AU" as I package up submissions, only to have them come back a notch lower, makes me guess XF45.
    When in doubt, don't.

I really appreciate all the opinions. I think I got this Morgan when I was a kid because all the other Morgan's I was buying were "so white and shiny" and this one was so different, it had color. Funny how I remember this coin as looking the same all those years ago, so it really hasn't toned any more, yet I look at new eagles that show incredible green and blue toning after just a few years. Funny.

Well, pure silver tones differently (and faster) than coin silver. But you must have stored that coin in good conditions to keep it looking the same. Good goin'.

The field & cheek clearly show wear but still has luster in the protected areas so I'd say XF/AU. Your 2nd set of pictures is so shiny it looks polished but that's the fluorescent lighting. If I saw it firsthand I might skip the XF & just say AU55.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
