Would this be taking too big a chance?

Expert advice needed on this one:

1967 Jim Palmer PSA 8 ST

The seller says that the stain in question is just gum. Does anyone fancy the idea of picking it up cheap, cracking it open, cleaning it up using the highly-effective "panty-hose" method I learned on these boards and re-submitting it?

Or is such an enterprise fraught with danger (besides the fact that the centering isn't ideal)?

All thoughts are welcome.

  • My guess is it would come back 7 even without the stain. Otherwise, why wouldn't the seller have done the same thing you are contemplating?
  • I have done this on many occasions. Typically, If you resubmit the card and ask for No Qualifiers it will drop just 1 grade (although, I have submitted 9 PD's before and had them come back straight 9's). For the card in question, you need to figure what you could get the card for plus the grading fee, plus shipping and compare that to the price of a straight 7 (last one on Ebay went for $50).

  • Gumstains won't come off the front of a card with the old pantyhose treatment as there is a light film of gum residue stuck to the card. Wax stains, however, come off very nicely and are undetectable by PSA once completely removed. If it's really gum, it will never get a higher grade than it is now...

I agree. I can't seem to get gum stains off of cards with panty hose. It only seems to work for wax stains.
