older coins in Dansco too small for ports

some of the earlier large cents are floating in their ports. What do some of us do to keep them rotating? I've heard of cutting strips of plastic flips and putting them around the circumference of the coin for a tighter fit. Will the PVC in them eventually ruin the coin? Other solutions?

Will the PVC in them eventually ruin the coin?

Not if you use non-PVC flips.

    Other solutions?

You might also consider buying a few Air Tites and use the foam rings to fill the space.

  • I have my large cent set in a Littleton album, most fit loose and turn. I just let them be. Handle album carefully and turning will be minimal. Don't let it bug you, these coins have been spent hundreds of times slight turning in album will not hurt them. Don't have a phobia, you'll keep playing with them until you do cause a problem.
  • cool advice!

Cut pieces of cardboard 2x2 holders, no PVC, no damage.

Adjust the length of the piece of the 2x2 that you use based on the amount of "play" the coin has in the port.
  • I've got a couple like that...cut small pieces of mylar from 2x2 holders and folded them into small "shims". Not the best method, I guess, but it works and no PVC concerns.
  • I've got the same problem, all the large cents are spinning. Got the opposite problem with bust halves, some are too big for the Dansco holes.
  • Hi,

Send a PM to Baley or hope he sees this thread. He has a spectacular set and I think I recall him mentioning a similar problem and solution.

I too use a little strip of non-pvc safeflip cut to 5-15 mm long and as wide as the thickness of the coin, to "shim" the loose coins to prevent them from spinning and driving me crazy.
You can see it in some of the pics, particularly the coronet large cent and eagle

  • Your coins have dried out.
You need to soak them in warm water
for 24 hrs. and they'll return to normal size.

You believe me, don't you ?

What's the deal with the Barber in the rays shield nickel port? Any problems with the large bust half as mentioned previously in this thread?

lol, the barber quarter shows through the hole that was empty at the time the pic was taken (WR shield nickel shown separately) As for the lettered edge bust half, yes, that hole is too small for most coins, I "stretched" the hole by pushing a well-worn coin into and out of it before trying to install my nice coin.

It was either that or shave the edges of my coin with an X-acto knife until it was small enough to fit image

the capped bust half hole was the only one that was way too small, a few were snug but no problem.

far more of the holes are a little too big, probably half a dozen or more required "shims"

  • tried the 2x2 cardboard-mylar strips tonight-works like a charm-fabulous(thanks folks). Baley, you got me nervous about the early bust half. My xf-45/au is waiting and shaking! If it's too big should I run a kennedy around the port in circular motion to expand the hole? (Gee, I hope Russ isn't reading this...)

yes, run the kennedy. It will work better if you use a 64AH
  • Baley-can I take a stab at the grade of that rays?
