Do not buy from this person

I recently had a very bad experience with this person (bigvariety) on ebay. I bought a card on the 7th of February and I still have not received it and probably never will. I bought insurance and I emailed this person numerous times about getting either the card or a refund but I received no responce. I just tried to call the number provided by good ol ebay and guess what!!! Disconnected!!!!! I can not believe this sob is going to get away with this but I have heard worse on this board so I guess it will come as no surprise to some. But anyway I just wanted to warn everybody here.

Troy, I sure know how you feel. I bought a 57 Topps Crandall PSA 8 from Brian Cooper in Ohio, who goes by the nickname of 1933cobb98 on ebay. He specifically stated "no insurance" on the item description, so I figured he self insured. Well, the card arrived bent in a cracked holder due to poor packaging. When I emailed him the same day it arrived, to request a refund, he gave me the old "you didn't pay for insurance". When I pointed out the "no insurance available" in the item description, he refused to give me a refund.

In short, he kept the card when I returned it and kept my money. And this guy had great feedback. I know why. I don't give neg feedback anymore because you ususally get retaliatory neg feedback in return, so it's not worth it.

It's the only time I've been ripped off on ebay.
  • Do the ebay community a favor and give the NEGATIVE on these bozos. They earned it. So what if you get one in return? It's not a death sentence. Explain your reasoning in the follow up remarks.

This obsession with perfect feedback is not much help to the unsuspecting bidder.

Before you bid, if you had checked the feedback and found the guy didn't offer insurance, didn't stand behind his item, kept the money and the card, would you have still bid?

Help us all out here, give the negative and take one for the overall good of the community if the loser retaliates. Thanks for posting the names at least.

I agree wholeheartedly with toppsgun - feedback is information we all count on - I hate getting the retaliatory neg too, but it won't stop me from letting everybody know about a deadbeat - ever. I just left one for an sob who doesn't get it, I'm waiting for the retaliatory neg and, if/when it comes, I'll explain it in my response. I know I never judge a seller with less than perfect feedback until I go in and read what the negs were about. I'm eternally grateful to those who have "taken one" for the sake of informing the community. To not leave a neg for a deadbeat is to give in to bullying tactics.

    I'm with Toppsgun and MMan,

You should take one for the team on this. A couple of negatives won't hurt your buying or selling on eBay. Most buyers don't even flintch over a couple of negatives in someones feedback... especially if they are retalitory in nature. If everyone uses the "I don't want to give one... cause I'll get one" mentality then these guys will get away with it forever.

If they are truly scam artists, they'll probably get a bunch of negatives in a short period of time, abandon the account, .... and then you can file with square trade to get your negative removed.

I've done this several times and it works out just fine. Heck, the last guy that burned me, I went back and won some more of his auctions, just to leave him more negatives ... and run him off faster.

The only down side is that you have to pay square trades extortion fee, but the feeling you get from "doing good" and "fighting evil" is well worth the cost.

  • I had a bad experience with a dealer selling opened wax. I am waiting until the last day to give the neg so he has little time to retaliate. It sucks because the seller should give the feedback when payment is received. The buyer should only give it when item is delivered. I always give feedback when I get the money, then count on the product/service I deliver and the integrity of the buyer to take care of the rest. It bit me 1 time but it seems the fairest way.

Plus, if I don't get them off of my feedback to leave, I get confused as to who paid, lol.

  • Troy - This is just said to maybe give you hope, but I thought that name seemed familiar. I won a card from him coincidentally about the same time in early February and I did receive it about two weeks later. It was just a small card. But it did arrive. I sent positive feedback and he left nothing.

Feel free to neg him as I dont even remember his name, but maybe there is hope it will be arriving. However that was more than a month ago.

Im sorry you got ripped off. Its happened to me too. I hope it wasnt a large $ item. Makes you feel sick doesnt it?

  • It was 42 dollars but it still makes me angry. I am just glad it wasn't anything more than that.

TOPPSGUN - I too agree! If no one lets us know about the bad bidders & sellers, they will keep sticking it to others.
I just got my 1st negative last week after thousands of transactions, it was a retalitory from a bidder who didn't pay or answer Emails, he had zero feedback. I was told by a few people not to Neg him, since he could retaliate. But I wanted to make it clear he was not a good bidder and he wasn't a shill bidding my auctions up...jay

Good for you Jay, after reading these posts i gave out my 2nd neg in 2yrs this evening to a guy that bait and switched me 3 months ago if he retallys ill followup...funny is it me? i buy from these guys with perfect feedback all this great card with 26 exclamation points i buy from them and i get at least a 1 or 2 over grade...and i am not that picune...........
    Good for you.
  • Troy - My card was half of that amount and if I remember correctly, the person only lived a couple hours away from me.

Things like this always baffle me though. If you are going to rip somebody off, why not do it for something of size? Why only $42?

    Keith
  • The person is in Batavia Illinois!!! I still have his address and everything but his phone number is bogus and he does not respond to my emails. After looking at his auctions he does not sell anything that is overly expensive so I have no idea why he would pick me to screw but he did. And even if it is not his fault and the post office messed up at least he could do is meet me half way on a fix.

It's weird; I've had buyers risk their feedback rating and eBay standing over a $10 card - I've had to realize that, although I wouldn't throw away my feedback rating for 10 bucks, there are people out there who wouldn't throw away 10 bucks for their feedback rating! I think these guys just change their mind and that's all there is to it; either way, we all need to know who the flakes are - Keith's take is right on: who's going to scheme and orchestrate a rip-off for 10 bucks?? Lotsa different kindsa folk out there, folks.

I have three total negs and they are all retaliatory. Negative feedback is needed to warn others and it does make you feel better. And yes, I'd do it over $10 if I thought the guy was habitually ripping people off.

Funny this thread came up. I just got my first neg the other day but it really doesn't bother me. It was a retaliation neg. This guy sold me a lot of 1973 Topps Hockey that were not the condition he stated. He had the nerve to offer me a 50% refund and he gets the cards. I told him he would get a neg if he didn't make good on the deal. He chose to ignore me. Here's my neg and here's my response to the neg I got:

    His neg

    My neg and my response

I feel better knowing that this guy will lose dollars on future auctions because of his lack of customer service.

By the way, everybody should write down this guys id so you don't get burned by him too.

well my taking one for the team resulted in a RETALLY lol at least the guy took the low road and i took the hi...peeps will see that.

what is it with the word JERK my retally neg was the same!! i guess we all and the ebay community know who the JERKS are!

    i feel better
    Good for you.
  • I just wanted to give you all a good laugh and tell that I informed ebay of this auction and that this person has bogus info and has not responded to my emails. Which if what I read on these boards is true I just waste several minutes of my life!! LOL!!!image

every negative ive left resulted in retaliation
but i hammered ebay to remove due to
technicalities.you just have to persist if
you're the honest one.ways of removal are
bad contact info provided by ebay(tricky-works
when the neg is AFTER ebay reinstated the
deadbeat and THEN he leaves you a neg.feedback
left with words that are libelous, curses and the like
also can be removed since they violate ebay policy.
negatives left by those that get booted for hitting
50 buy it nows and instant negatives are easily
removed as ebay knows there are "hijackers" and
minors out there.you just have to pursue what is
right.dont take the first NO from enay or the second
and third.persist and ask for supervisors to take a look.
it works but takes effort.neg the b@stards if they really
    deserve it.
Money is your ticket to freedom.
  • hmmm...As a seller tho..I would have to say the guy is probaly right you do run into a jerk about every 1,000 deals..On the other end look at this way..Sellers get stiffed every day right now I have 3 partial sets of football that were sold broken up and raw on ebay and one buyer came through and bought 36 cards and hasnt paid..I have the selling fees at 5% and the listing fees at .40 a card to eat plus have to relist them at .40 each..which means Im gonna lose as some of them were 1.00 cards and now have .80 in fees..The guy you referred to has only 9 negatives out of 4,000 deals..I would buy from him even if you had a bad experience with him..In one case we had 2 guys flame us here about cards..we refunded the money and relisted them..Because we were part of a thread 4 diferent people emailed our customers through ebays system and that is a violation of ebays rules..On one card we had already got positive feedback for it and the guy and his friends still posted all of our negative feedback from 3 and half years of selling a 1,000 + auctions a week..at that time we had 11,872 positives and now we have 12,378 positives and same amount of negs..So it doesnt mean the guy is unlegit it means that you had a bad experience..How many times you shop at walmart? they average 30 lawsuits a month..Posting that crap about him when he has a 99.5% rating and over 4,000 total feedbacks is wrong..However if there is a person with like a 95.8 feedback rating and selling cards for 100,000.00 and never sold a baseball card in his life and has stolen pictures and wont meet anyone and tell how many backs are red or black.. sounds more like a scam than this guy that the hockey came from..Just remember noone is perect and if he refunded your money then he is alright.I refunded the money to the jerk-offs that wrote about me..Some people get caught up in the negative.. If he didnt refund your money than that is a different story..
  • Sandlot,

Who are you talking to? I f you are talking about my person he does not have 4000 feedbacks and his percentage is 98.7 % and he has not refunded any or all of my money!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think he was talking to me. I don't have a major problem with people misgrading their own cards as long as it isn't a serious over estimation. The thing I have a problem with is his option not to refund my money. If a seller states that cards are nm-mint condition then they either A) better be sure that they are or B) better be prepared to offer full refunds. They are using that "nm-mint" statement for one purpose only - to make more money. That is called stealing. I don't care if he has 100,000 positive feedbacks. He stole my money and won't give it back.

  • Hench1,
I just won a 1955 topps psa 8 from 1933cobb98....all I have to say is if my card comes cracked, damaged, dimantled...I will get a refund..if not there will be serious neg feedback left..I have bought enough cards on ebay in the last few months....(approx 5k) and if I get retailatory neg feedback its ok..everyone of the big sellers...dougoutman, bbeexchange, andiehadley, and others have had me bid and send upwards of 500-1K a week to them with no problems..so I am not worried about neg feedback...and one more thing..had you left feedback for him, explaining your problem I would have insured my card knowing you had that problem...please in the future leave the feedback..if you are honest and pay for your items, or ship your items (if you are a seller) it wont matter about one or 2 negs...please because it helps people like myself who are bidding!!!!!

OK, guys, I'm convinced. I guess it just bothers me that my feedback % is only 97.6, due to retalitory negs, but ya'll are right, I will post negs in the future. Good luck in dealing with 1933cobb98 (Brian Cooper of Ohio). He has a great feedback profile, but, in my opinion, is a ripoff artist when he wants to be. And you never know with those types.

    >>You should take one for the team on this.

I agree. I regard anything above about 99.5% to be the same as 100% positive feedback.

If you've done ebay for several years it's just about impossible to NOT get
a negative here or there - between the newbie who accidentally leaves
a negative, to the guy who wants it in time for Christmas when you made
no promises of such, to the just plain mistakes like the one I paid and got the
card from and my negative says that I never paid, even though I keep handy
the thank you note that Mr. Dickson sent with the card , etc etc

P.s. I have never done business with bigvariety.

OK, bailone, how does this clarify things?: 1933cobb98 (Brian Cooper of Ohio) RIPPED ME OFF FOR $60 EVEN THOUGH HE HAS A VERY GOOD FEEDBACK PROFILE. HE POORLY PACKAGED THE CARD, REFUSED TO INSURE IT, THEN KEPT MY CARD WHEN I RETURNED IT FOR A REFUND WITHOUT GIVING ME MY MONEY BACK. HE EVEN ENCOURAGED ME TO COMMIT FRAUD BY TELLING ME THAT HE WOULD RESEND THE CARD TO ME WITH INSURANCE AND THEN FILE A CLAIM FOR THE DAMAGE, WHICH I REFUSED TO DO. I SAVED THE EMAIL, HOWEVER, SO I CAN PROVE IT.
