Toned Peace Dollar- What ya think? #1

Well
I have 4 of these and this is the first. Came out of folder. All had some sort of toning and I just picked these four because they looked the nicest.
Now do ya think the colors are natural?
The reverses on all the coins are 99% white.
The prices didn't break the pocket book.

The coin looks pretty, but anytime I see that shade of brown the first thing that comes to mind is AT.

I almost hate to say it, but AT or not, that one is a keeper. Very very nice looking.

I should add that if a coin tones in a folder, the pattern is usually a target, and covers 100% of the periphery. This coin is only roughly half covered.

I agree with PT on this one - I don't know if it's real but it's a beauty nonetheless.

Well, maybe I should have said that I picked them out of a folder. Where were they before that I couldn't tell ya. The folder did have about 75% of the run there. Some were fully toned with darker colors. I just picked out the nicest ones. All the reverese were mostly white with just a hint of toning on one small spot(see rev pics). The toning on the other coins were the usual (what I call ugly) toning.
These were the most eye appealing to me.
They all a show golden final color towards the center.

Did they come out of a Whitman Album by any chance? It would have have been dark blue with gold lettering. I like the looks of the coin, and think it may be natural, depending on how bright your image is when compared to the actual coin.

I think the toning happened naturally. Whether or not a grading service would find it market acceptable is another matter, though.

Hey Strat.... you ever seen the likes of this particular toning? What you think real or bunk? How you think it toned? I think I nailed pretty much what the coin looks like with my scanner, with the exception of the vibrancy.image

  • I don't mean to be insulting or anything, but I have never seen a Peace dollar that I know to be "naturally toned", have that kind of toning. The color or the pattern. If it didn't cost too much, that's OK because it's still pretty to look at.image

  • Nice looking coin. Has a natural look to it, but seems too good to be true. I think the coin doctors have just about perfected the art of AT.
  • I am with uofa1285, tough call on this one.

In my opinion, this coin has been artificially toned with an acid solution. The bright blues and reds are not natural. I'd bag it for AT.

I feel if the colors in this image look just like the coin in hand then I would say the toning is bunk. Or put it this way.... If I were looking at this coin to purchase and the colors in this image looked like the coin in hand I would put this one back real quick and wouldn't even think of buying it for any price.

So I guess that means I don't like the coin.image

It looks like a high grade AU that has been dipped & retoned in an album.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

STMan, you showing off that "tired ole coin again?" At least it's in new plastic now, as the old slab had my fingerprints all over it. That's definitely a coin I won't ever forget!
