Lord of the Rings sets

I received a nice color brochure from New Zealand monday. It was for the Lord of the Rings collectible coins in gold and silver. Prices ranged from $30 for a single "gold" colored $1 coin to $4300 for a set of 3 $10 gold proof coins. Will something like this retain it's value? Will it appreciate in value? Some of the designs are quite good.

At those prices I doubt they will retain their value. Do they specify mintage?

The set with the 3 gold crowns for $4300 have a listed mintage of 15,000 sets. The other sets are 150,000 pcs. and the less expensive ones don't have a mintage listed so I suppose it will be whatever they can sell.

  • I think you'll be luck to get double the bullion value of the proofs in the aftermarket.

I bought a something like 50 sets of the original Harry Potter gold and silver coins for a client who wanted to use them for advertising premiums (Buy XXX and we'll send you as a free bonus this set of Harry Potter coins free as a bonus). Anyway, the client had some left over and asked me to sell them for him. Double bullion is about what we got, and that only by selling them coin by coin on eBay.

So I think it's a slam dunk certainty that you'll take a $2,000 or $3,000 beating on the $4,300 set.

    Good luck,

I won't take a beating at all. I have no intention of buying them. Some people will and I was wondering what the thoughts might be from people here. I already made up my mind they wouldn't be worth much.
