Pics of new Jefferson

Got my 10 rolls (5 ea. "P" and 5 ea. "D") and only opened two so far. Really am quite dissatisfied with the mints quality considering the premium for the purchases. Leads me to think they do so on purpose just to keep us collectors buying the darn things trying to find slab-worthy ones!

Anyway, this is one of the best from the two rolls. The Philly ones are terrible and the Denvers aren't much better.

  • I am usually disappointed with the quality of the coins I get from the mint. I always have high hopes that this time it's going to be different, but it never is. But what am I going to do, get my coins from the other mint?image
Actually this is one of the reasons I'm not really interested in modern issues.

  • That one looks pretty nice to me. It looks better than most pics people have posted so far. I think nickel is still the hardest metal to mint so nickels will have less super high grade coins than other series.

Is it just me, or does the new reverse look to be so "low-relief" as opposed to the nicer "high-relief" obverse? Just looks like a crappy token reverse, if you ask me!! Something a 4th grader would draw/design - - not something to be placed on a nation's coinage!!

Is that the BEST we can come up with?? If so, why even bother?
  • Looks to be a nice PQ 66. I opened my 10 rolls already. The "D"'s were better overall but 1 roll of "P"'s were superb and yielded better examples. Just my experience. 68 is going to be tough.

I asked you if you thought that one might be 67. I had missed the ding near the finger... if only it wasn't there!

That is one of the nicer Jeffs I have seen. At least this reverse isn't as poorly struck as most other appear to be. Too bad about that one reverse hit.

I'm not sure what you guys expect from rolls of circulation quality coins

I think it looks nice enough, but I know nothing about "slab-worthy" modern coins.

That's the problem, Baley. These are supposed to be UNcirculated coins. But the methods of the mint insure that 99.5% of all their UNC coins will have scratches, hits or nicks. Instead of dropping them into a bin after ejection, they could chute or ramp them into the bin. This would minimize the damage from falling on top of each other.

Anyway, finished my 5 rolls of "D" mints and found 3 with die cracks. Here is one of them. As you can see, the DC on the left runs from the end of the left arm to the rim and the one on the right goes from the wristlet halfway to the rim.

Here is a pic of THE nicest "D" out of 200. Still has a few very minor nicks on the reverse. I found that they either had perfect reverses or perfect obverses with the other side having flaws to some extent, and the rest had hits, nicks, scratches to both.

Couldn't capture the luster on the reverse. NOT two different coins! Think it will make 67? image

Here is a "Perfect" reverse. The Obverse is only a 66.

Cool, spy has the same die crack I found. Our coins are brothers!
