US Mint question...what do they do with

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,376 ✭✭✭✭✭
the returned product?

I know that last year's mint sets that I initially received were crap. I returned them and got replacements.
So, did they pawn them off on someone else or did they cut the cellophane and put them in circulation which is where they belonged?
Or, do they destroy them?

I am thinking they sell off the returned items?

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

The put them back on the shelf and send them out to the next customer, who thinks he is getting a chance at a never before examined coin.

Dealers order thousands of proof sets, cherry pick them and return the rest.

Sad, but I believe this to be true. You have to catch the early bird. In other words, "He with the most bucks wins".
There are few among us common folk who can afford to get aboard the early bird train,.. weather it be proof or bullion tickets.
Though, it's nice when you're fortunate enough to get high bid or first dibs on the spoils of those who choose to pawn off those sparkling examples. image

It is true. On one of the email groups I'm on one of the members go in some substandard proof sets. He sent them back with note included in each set stating whet the problem was with the set. We found out about this because another member of the list also received some substandard sets. . .with the notes from the first member still inside them.

At least some have been destroyed in the past according to the mint.

I wasn't aware that any were ever reissued. They should, at the very
least inspect the returns to see if they are good product. Many sets are
returned because they have significant problems and missing coins.

That is a great story! I'm not surprised in the least.
