Double Tiered Rim on 2004-P Jeffersons

Comrades,
I've noticed many 2004-P Jeffersons with two-tiered rims. First noticed it as it felt like something sharp. The rim formed at the edge of the strike is slightly higher than the natural rim at the outer perimeter of the coin.

Can't catch this one in photos....

Anyone else see this?

You are right some do, at least the "P" mints. Not all have it so it must be some strike doubling or something.

Sounds like a "wire rim". It's caused by excessive striking pressure forcing a thin fin of metal up between the collar and the body of the die.

Conder101 - Would this also give the coins a stronger strike?

How do the "high-rimmed" ones look compared to ordinary nickels?

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

Oh yeah! That's because the US Mint is going to recall all of them! Right!?!??!

I would expect them to be very well struck. It should beeasier for the metal to fill the recesses of the die than to squees through that 2 thousandths of a inch or less gap between the collar and the die shank. (Unless the collar die is old and worn close to being out of tolerance. In that case the gap will be wider and the metal might be able to fin fairly easily.)
