Looks like a wide reim SBA to me. My sense of beauty is somewhat perverted (since I collect Barber coins, recordings of Thelonious Monk, films of Edward D. Wood and John Waters, and obsolete hard drives). I'll let SBA collectors pass judement on this coin, since my reaction to SBAs is to leave them as tips to waitresses whose service is "slightly less than wonderful", to quote the diplomatic phrase uttered by Fats Waller.

It's definitely the lesser common variety, the wide rim - no question about that. It looks to grade around MS65, which is somewhat respectable, but I have a feeling many of them are that high since the ugly things never circulated. (I just had to stick that part in)

Anyhow, to a collector of such things who doesn't already have one (who that would be I don't know) your coin might bring in around $10. Don't bother having it slabbed, not worth the fee.

    Hope this helps.

I have tried to see the intrinsic beauty of this series, I have tried over and over and over again......BUT ....it just ain't there. I have a lot them, I just can't look at them. I even tried to just put them behind the kitty litter box, you know-"out of sight-out of mind", But my cats started using the floor - guess that says something.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

MS65 Wide Rims bring between $75.00 to $150.00 on eBay is graded as MS65 by PCGS.

MS66 coins bring $300.00 or so on eBay.

MS64 coins bring between $30.00 to $50.00 on eBay. I sold several MS64 coins for $28.00 on eBay recently.

Without seeing it in hand, I would have to say it would grade MS64/5.

I have to agree I just can not get into the series myself. I have this one up at ebay. I just wanted some opinions on the coin. I feel it was something I should have had graded and then flipped it but was unsure if it was worth sending in because there is more chatter on the cheek showing under 5x power than the pictures show. Oh well I guess someone will get a nice wide rim SBA with decent eye appealimage

I kinda like the reverse - the eagle and the moon. Mixing old, traditional history with new. OTOH, the obverse looks like Norman Bates when dressed as his mother! When I see it, I can hear that screechy music thinking Janet Leigh is just about to get it in the shower!

Also, I find it ironic that MSD61 thinks it's an ugly coin, while having a Ike as his icon. Kettle, black, etc. image

This coin has few freinds but if the question is "Is this a nice '79 near date SBA?" then the
answer is definitely "YES". Granted there have been a lot graded in higher grade than this
but you'll find you'll have to look through an incredible number of '79's to find one nicer. In
fact that search will yield only a handful of coins that are even in choice condition.

Probably fewer than 3% of the '79's are near date and most of these are very unattractive.
