Well, I'm just not knowledgable enough to judge this one...but it's been cleaned or whizzed, I think.image

I think they got carried away after trying to clean the fingerprint off the obverse

  • It appears to be a proof, but it's definitely not 64/65 material. Looks 60/61 at best, and probably been cleaned.....

not a proof in my opinion- look how mushy the denticles are but does it really matter on junk coin like this? My guess it's about a $125 coin proof or not. mike

Any time I see an eBay PowerSeller post a raw "Proof 64/65" Barber with a Buy It Now at Graysheet bid for PR-60 I hit the back button. I can't tell from the pictures exacty what's wrong. but will eat my hat if this coin slabs at PCGS or NGC at PR64 or above. I have a larger collection of funky hats (many ghand-made in West Africa) than even Thelonious Monk had, so in case the high bidder is a member of this forum and gets lucky, he/she can ask me to eat a porkpie, fedora, kente cloth skullcap, or even yarmulke from Ouagadougou.

Please, only one hat ingestion per offer. (Egestions mailed to the winning bidder at no additional cost, upon request).

  • No opinion on the coin itself, but the metal I can comment on. Appears to be chemically damaged and luster challenged. I know lighting and digital imaging can play tricks on the eye, but the angle of light to dark ratio makes it appear to have been not only cleaned, but polished as well.

I believe it is a proof, and I believe that it a crappy scan. I also believe that there's no way in hell it is PR65 or even 64!

I would guess the coin has been cleaned and shined up. A proof coin should be bought professionally graded. There are many proofs and it is not worth the cost wondering what the coin grades, because with proofs you can get hairlines up to 64 and they will not show up in a scan at all.

It could be a proof 61 with hairlines up the wazoo, or even a cleaned and rubbed on AU. Who knows, and why take a chance unless you can see the coin in person?

I see Proof and don't see any cleaning that I can prove but I assume it is since I see old fingerprints & stains. It has some marks around the left stars & on the cheek that I wouldn't want to see on a 65.
