I've seen alot of people asking questions recently about OBW rolls/ tubed rolls etc. I have had many questions myself over the last year about buying rolls. I have had tremendous success personally but also have been scammed by people "rerolling" coins and claiming they are untouched original bankwrapped rolls. I think the most obvious thing to realize is that if you are buying rolls from the 50's, 60's and even 70's you are not going to find neat and unfettered wrapping paper. I constantly see rolls on eBay that are so obviously rerolled coins it makes me sick. This may sound very simplistic and logical to many reading this but we have many new members who find "treasure hunting" (as I call it) old rolls of coins to be a tremendously exciting way to enjoy the hobby. If it looks to good to be original, always assume it is and move on.
Anyway.....here is a submission I rec'd grades today on. It is my 4 free grades for renewing my PCGS membership. These 4 pennies were from a recent batch of legit OBW rolls I recently purchased. I still have 6-10 more that will go the same grade. This is a pop 47/1 better year for Lincoln Memorial's. Quite a decent find from a roll over 40 years old. I have 20-30 other Lincoln's from OBW's from various years currently at PCGS. So if you enjoy searching rolls....be cautious but enjoy the hunt. Rolls from the 50's, 60'a and 70's are still very affordable.

1. It's very highly likely that if you are only "treasure hunting" your rolls for high grades to slab you are skipping over what I consider the treasure in the rolls. I'd still be happy to get your leftovers, just as you would be happy to get mine, because I do not pull out any coins that are not die varieties.
2. Even if someone were looking for die varieties there are very few people I know of around this country who would pull out everything I am looking for, because most people don't know what's there to look for. Whether it be lack of interest or experience on their part, I still find all sorts of stuff worth keeping in rolls that have been picked over.

On OBW rolls, sometimes the opened ones are fine, in fact many were cherried for varieties but not GEMS. I have found numerous GEMS in tubed rolls but also junk.
See what Chuck said. I don't bother with varieties unless it's a Doubled Die. RPM's are too common to pay attention to all the different ones.
I always look for the errors and varieties first!! High grade gems are just a secondary bonus when I find 'em
I have looked at many eBay auctions for "unsearched" rolls and found only 1 that I thought might actually be untouched.
Of course I won that auction and am waiting to receive the roll.
Any tips on how to tell if it is an unopened roll or a rerolled bunch of coins.
Also where do you get your rolls.
Any eBayers you can recommend as having unsearched rolls?
The roll I won was a 1952-s nickel roll.
Here is link to auction I won.

I buy rolls at shows, eBay, local dealers and everywhere/anywhere I can find them. I believe that when buying on eBay, seller feedback is the most important item to consider. I never buy from someone selling off brand slabs either!! Wrappers can be decieving. Email the seller if you have questions!! Also avoid sellers without a return policy. The good dealers always offer a return policy even on rolls as long as they are returned unopened. Good luck and keep looking. Most importantly.....enjoy the hobby!!!
