i am in shock right now after looking at the pcgs..

price listings on their web site for the 1999 silver state quarters in proof 70. they range from $1500 to $2000 . am i seeing things or are they real prices. the reason i ask is that i picked up a 5 piece set of 1999 state quarters in individual ICG slabs in proof 70 dcam last june of 2003. on june 27th i posted a question on this board asking if these would be a good investment down the road. if these prices are corect then i hit the mother load. i know they are not in pcgs holders but still for a $204 purchase price for the set i think it might have been a good investment. anyone have any input? i tried checking ebay closed items but i didnt find any but then again i really dont want to go thru 36 pages of items. anyone seen any sell recently?

The PCGS price guide is somewhat inaccurate. In addition to which, the prices don't apply to third world slabs.

Good luck in getting anything close to those prices for your coins. You will need it!

icg would probably get about $200 or what a pcgs 69dcam set would.

Perhaps what needs to be pointed out again is the fact that ICG is very liberal with moderns. It is not unusual for ICG PF 70s to grade 68 at PCGS. Even NGC has become liberal on the 70s, just look at their pop reports for 70s compared to PCGS. When it comes to 70s, the only coins that go for anywhere near the PCGS price guide are PCGS coins. Even NGC 70s are severely discounted.

while at a coin show in El Paso, I had a small dealer/school teacher show me his personal Proof quarter set.
He was a very polite Elderly man, he told me all the coins were DCAM 70, then he showed them to me.

    All were in ICG holders......

He showed me atleast 8 coins, unfortunately they were spotted harlined and even weak frost....
    They were not pr70 coins...

But he was so happy and grinning ear to ear, he told me how he assemble this set in 3 years time.....

I told him I was very happy for him, and that it was a very nice set...

I didn't have the heart to say that they are really not of high quality, he was so happy, and so polite.....

In the end I guess thats what matters..... if your satisified, and he was!

In the world of moderns PCGS is essentially all that counts. Too bad you bought ICG.

    Hmmm...

He isn't hearing anything he wasn't already told.

Sorry JTMC, this set did not get even 1 bid at $139

I guess we can call off the code team. The shock has no doubt subsided.

So is this a bad time to bring up my set of PF70DCAM state quarters in PCI holders? image

The set on teletrade got $300. Guess the eBay guy should send his there.
  • To play the devils advocate here this is the position I took in another recent thread and were told by many the higher quality coin will get the bigger bucks. That thread compared icg to pcgs and I mentioned the pcgs coin will get more money 99/100 times.
  • my dreams of incredible wealth were crushed this morning when i checked that teletrade auction. therev is a lesson to be learned here. that is collect what you really like because you may end up holding them for a very long time and could be painful to look at if you dont really like them if they were bought as a gamble as an investment.

maybe i will take them to the local coin show this weekend and see if i can trade em for a PCGS 1916 SLQ in MS66.

Buy the coin not the slab and always collect what you like. Anything else just makes you an investor with a bottom line. That's just my opinion.

the pcgs price guide provides comic relief. ie. after you get frazzled from browsing the comics-grading section, you can get some relief laughing at the pcgs price guide.
