Is a crossover submission a good idea?

I have a few really nice coins graded by NTC and NGC that I would like to have placed in a PCGS holder. I have heard that it's better to break them out of the holders and submit them to PCGS as raw coins. The reason was that PCGS would probably downgrade them if I sent them in the holders since their competitors certified them. Please tell me what you think? Break them out and send them raw or do a crossover submission?

I sent a 1923-S Mercury Dime--MS61 NGC for a minimum grade of MS60. They sent it back DNC (did not cross).
I broke it out and sent it back and the dime graded MS63.
Good luck what ever you decide.

I have had several crossover coins get a higher grade at pcgs.
I have also had several downgrades but the majority crossed at the same grade.
If the coins are worth alot at their current grade and you would not be happy with a lower grade then cross them because once you crack them then even the co. that originally graded them might not give them the same grade again.
If you don't care about the grade then you might want to crack them. If I had 7 raw coins to send and 2 in holders I would crack them and send them with the other raw ones to cut down on costs.
If I only had ones in holders I would cross them at any grade as you always risk possible damage to a coin when you crack it even if its a small chance.
However, if you don't know how to crack the coin out, you could damage it trying. Can someone link a thread that described how to crack a coin out.
Sometimes I crack them out, and sometimes I send them in slabbed.
I have a pant load of NGC slabs in for crossover. Will see how it goes. I hated to break these out as they are fairly high level and wouldn't want to mess with resubmitting to NGC.

Its costs whatever the service level is. You can crossover economy if you have 5 or more to cross.

My great Uncle Al Coholic used to say that a man's choice/s wasn't nearly as important as his reason/s for making that choice. You have gotten a smattering of opinions here on the board, but I would also seek opinions from someone knowledgeable who has actually seen your coins. Just yesterday I sent a few in opting for the crossover choice mainly because I don't think that there is a lot of chance for upgrade (a few are AU53's at a grand apiece so 55's may not be worth the risk) and I really don't want the hassle of trying to get them back into NGC holders if they come back bodybagged or downgraded. OTOH I think they will do quite well in the PCGS holder should I decide to sell.
