Mantle lovers take a look!!!

Heres something to gaulk at. Lets go back to the day in 1984 when my father literally had to take the coat off his back to complete a deal. I was 12 and can remember the day as if it was yesterday. Driving to the bank, being told dont tell mom and cracking a case of 84 donruss in 35 minutes to use the mattinglys for trade. What you see is the buy prices, its half of the first page of three. Please lmk if the scan didn't take.

Personal favorite is the 59 in fair condition. I'm not sure if pops was grading or what but it found its way into a 7 holder for a whopping 10 bucks into it.

AWESOME! Did you end up buying all those cards - or were those just your target cards?

    Uni-

He bought them all plus 4 more colums worth. I'll never see anything like it again. Though almost all of them are gone to date or will be after this week. We kept a few, the deal consisted of 750 bucks my dads yankee coat, about 10 sets and a bunch of mattingly rcs.

Your father is a WISE MAN. Reminds me of the time I dropped a bunch of Will Clarks 87 Fleers ($35 per pop at the time) - for 4 vintage Mantles (late 60's) and a bird/magic rookie that I sold last year raw for $150. The fact that your dad dropped $750 back in 84 is something only we on this board and fellow collectors can truly appreciate. Props on the score.

I know he looks at me now and just shakes his head 5000k for an unopened case what are you nuts he sais then I always go back to the story and remind him that I kept it quiet for at least 6 yrs till he made a huge profit. At that point my blackmailing tactics came to an endimage
  • If the fair made it into a 7, did you grade any of the Ex or Mint ones?

ahhh your list brings me back to a day when we had but 4 grades, fair, good ex and mint and fair was ex/mnt by todays standard. what we call poor fair and good today was called crap back then. I remm selling those 84 donruss Mattinglys in 86-87 for 50.00 bucks a pop. the fleer for 35 and the topps or o=p=c for 25.........your father used a standard that was alive and well thru 1976 or there abouts in the 80z the standards changed to what we see today.
    Good for you.

    Cubfan,

He had some that graded 8's. The aarons graded 5 and 6. Last one went to newport today 4ish.

Pitcher- I thought you guys might get a kick out of it he had this in the binder with the remaining mantles all pretty much pr-ex stuff which I'm listing this week. I wish he would have had the centering standard down instead of the theory of a card is a # which needs to be filled in any condition.image
