Post your Nickel 3-centers, or just tell me you like my new one.

Here's one I just got today. 1865 (first year of issue). NGC MS 63.

This coin has nice delicate toning, and lots of luster, which of the course the scan washes out.

I've always liked the three cent nickels, especially original ones such as yours. It's too bad this series doesn't get much respect.

There's a lot of beauty in its simplicity. The nice toning doesn't hurt either.

I personally find the design very attractive, and yes, it is difficult to find raw coins that haven't been cleaned. I eventually gave up and shelled out the moolah for this one. Actually, I looked at over 30 of these coins slabbed by The Top Three, and I found many 64's and 65's that didn't have the eye-appeal of this one. (But you have to trust me on that, as the scan is pretty bad.)

I like your new one. Been trying to find a nice 68 with the eye appeal that I'm looking for. Not too much luck lately. BTW, what's with the brown streak down running beside the word OF down through the date? A lot of Buffalo Nickels that I've been looking at lately have this streaking as well. Is this something specific to Nickel or is it a product of scanning the coin instead of taking a photo?

  • I like your new 3 cent nickel. My newest 3 cent nickel has two holes in it. I will add it to my holey coin hat. Thanks indianabyron!

  • It is very nice. When I was looking at the picture, I was just imagining what the world would have been like when that coin was minted. Wild!

    Thank you Jack Handy.

Crap. I need a new prescription.

I don't know, but I've seen this type of streak on an number of darkside coins as well. It may have to to do with a less-than-homogenous alloy mix. For instance, consider this greysider:

That's a nice coin, JohnZ. Looks like a nice strike.

It is a nice series. Classic, clean design.

Here's a proof from the date. They look great in cameo.

    That's a stunning proof, dpoole.

A proof with cameo is next on my list.

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

  • I've got a couple of 'em that were housed in PVC when I got 'em. I've done my best to salvage, but the damage has already been done. You are all making me want a nice one...

you are a smart kid you did a good job posting those photos

the 1871 is ultra cameo the only one graded by so far LOL by ngc as proof65 ultra cameo

the 1883 is ngc proof 67 and the 1884 is a ngc proof 66

all are solid for the grade coins in other words they meet the standards

the colored coins are really uncommon

the 1871 is a really uncommon coin to get nice looking and cameo and even moreso in deep/ultra cameo

pcgs calls them deep cameo ngc calls them ultra cameo

so deep and ultra is the same just a different company

like coke and pepsi same thing just different companies

Thanks for posting Michael's coins, John. I'd heard about them, but haven't seen them. The toning effect is gorgeous, and the 1871 is spectacular! And yes, Michael knows his 3CNs!
  • Wow those are great. i have never seen any with that kind of color before!

Ealandg, I'm sorry to hear of the PVC damage on your coin. That's why I've chosen my icon--hopefully together we can all make a difference here and get PVC products completely banned from the numismatic marketplace.

Michael, those are some stunning, drop-dead gorgeous coins!!!! Thanks for sharing.
