error coins... to set or not to set... that is the big question?

I just got a 2003 Proof set that has 8 errors. They are either missing the "3" or missing the "1" in the state quaters statehood date, or missing the "200" So now for the big question...future profit speaking only, do I break them out and send them in to be slabbed indivually or keep them together as an "error set" to sell in the future? Which would be better? I do not collect error coins, although that is a wonderful dream of mine but, not my financial option, so any profit made would be used to help complete my higher grade lincoln collection (which will probably take my lifetime LOL). It was kindof thrilling to have my first error coins! Any advice appreciated!
Thanks
Ginger

  • From what I have seen...It might be rarer to find a set that DOESN'T have the errors...

Ginger, think about this. Are you really excited to own this set? If you are, then save it. That's why you bought a set in the first place. These kind of errors don't excite me because I perceive that they are common and don't stand out. I believe most collectors of coins feel the same way. Sure, we all want a 1955 doubled die Lincoln cent but the number of specialists interested in the hundreds or maybe thousands of recognized error coins is not that large IMHO. If you aren't really interested in collecting this set, then don't expect alot of others are to the extent of paying you big money to aquire it. If you purchased the set directly from the US Mint you can return it for another set. Remember, this is just my opinion and others may disagree, Good luck. Steve image

Ginger I hate to be the bearer of bad news but as far as errors go they are minor as well as common & really aren't worth the cost of slabbing so I'd say keep the sets intact. If for some odd reason they do end up carrying a prem later you still probably won't make up the cost of slabbing when you sell them.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
