When sending in a coin to try and get it upgraded, is it recommended to crack it out first or just send it in its holder?I was wondering if the graders are influenced by seeing the previous grade given to a coin, especially if they know its been submutted several times before. Then I like the idea of keeping it in its holder so I dont have to worry about damaging it while trying to get it out or it getting damaged during shipping.

If you are an expert grader, then crack it since it will surely grade on its merits.
But if you are not an expert, I say limit your losses to the grading fee and send it in in the holder.

<< <i>The graders have no idea it came in a holder. >>
Wrong. The grader will look at the submission form, which will have the prior grade on it. The can, and do, look at the submission form while grading the coin.
<< <i>I'm with Steve--crack it out or don't send it in.

Well... recent NGC MS66* $5,000.00 Morgan turns into a $1,200.00 MS64 coin...
I don't know, if on every occasion, this is sound advice.

<< <i>Upgrading is different than crossover so if you are confident it will upgrade then crack it. I mite be inclined to see a couple other opinions tho. >>
I agree that upgrading is different than crossover, but from a recent experience I had a Walker that I was confident was undergraded and so I sent it in for resubmission, (returned in holder), and sure enough it went from an ms66 to ms67.
<< <i>Well we shall see. Why would the grader need to see the submission form? Go back and read the descripion of crossover service as methinks that you are misinformed. >>
I did and I don't see anything that suggests that the grader does not see the submission form. I have asked customer service this very issue and they said that the submission form accompanies the coin to grading. Why need to do it that way? No reason, but that's the way it is (or so I was told by a customer service rep).
But why not ask HRH tonight on the Q&A forum just to make sure?

The first thing you need to realize is that even is a good thing
Braddick gives an excellent example. He had a NGC MS66*, now he has a PCGS MS64.
If you want to gamble on an upgrade keep in mind the potential loss in value between it's current grade and lower grade.
Crack it and you are betting it will upgrade.
Submitting it to cross with a minimum grade, or an upgrade review means the worst case is you are out your submission fees.

<< <i>I've toured the PCGS grading process twice and never saw a single invoice with any tray of coins. Invoice numbers are on the stickers attached to each raw coin flip or crossover coin, but I was told and shown that the graders do not see any invoice paperwork, nor are their computers able to access the Customer Service database that lists the coins' original grades.

I would also add that in addition to having a $200.00 Walker in a PCGS holder going from ms66 to ms67 upon resubmission, and raising the value by $1000.00 and not being a dealer should tell you guys something about cracking vs. resubmission........
Plus from talking with both dealers in my sig line and asking this very question I was told that they have resubmitted coins in their holders that have upgraded raising the value in multiples of thousands of dollars.
