question about rolls

i'm trying to put a collection together of uncirculated rolls, but the majority of people selling them have them in plastic tubes, is it worth the same price to pay for these than original rollsimage
i like collecting a wide range of coins but my preference is full step jefferson nickels

  • No, if they are in a plastic tube, they have probably been picked thru, and you are looking at a roll that was put together with the left overs.

There are several schools of thought on this; but remember that you're not buying plastic tubes or paper coin wrappers. You're buying coins. So-called "original bank wrapped" rolls are not always original bank wrapped, just like "original unopened" proof sets are not always unopened. Personally, I do not like to purchase ANYTHING sight unseen, and then compound the risk by not looking at it after I buy it. In the long-ago past, I've obtained/purchased many bank wrapped rolls, some directly from banks in the year of issue. I always opened them, inspected them, and saved only the best of the lot. So...in effect, I "cherry picked" the bank wrapped rolls to "put together" the best for my roll sets, which are stored in air-tight plastic coin tubes. JMHO, of course. In today's market, the "shotgun" bank wrapped rolls generally do bring a premium over plastic tubed rolls. image

    hey Jeff

your implication is that what's in paper rolls haven't been picked through. i would suggest that neither can be determined though plastic tubed coins have most probably been looked at. with paper wrapped rolls it's almost impossible to make a determination on the type that's folded over. shotgun rolls almost always show some sign of having been opened or not, but there is really no fool-proof way to know, more grey area than black-and-white.

bottom line-----i like bottom lines-----is that it's always best to buy either from a dealer/seller you know or can trust or else buy sight seen and make a determination before buying.

  • Al - I agree, I didn't mean to imply the wrapped rolls were original. Most have probably been looked through....where as all in plasitic tubes have been.
  • Got the 2004 nickels today in the mint wrapper. I'd like to keep the rolls in the original paper but put them
in tubes to protect against wear and grime.

Are there tubes that will comfortably accept the wrappers without gouging the paper? Other than quarter tubes?
