What's up with these 'ebay' emails

that have the subject line with:

RE: Question for seller -- Item #379741125

and the text of the message says something like:

Hi, please add another $19 for shipping to Alaska.

Hello, what is the shipping cost to Saskatchewan?

I'm getting 1 or 2 each day, and I know that they're bogus. However, I don't understand the point. I cannot figure out how someone could be scamming money off this, or what the intent is all about.

Anyone know? image

have you looked up the item number?

is it an active or real auction?

  • I've been getting them too. About 2-3 per week. When I go to Ebay and type in the item # I'm told that the item has either been removed, auction expired, or can not be found. I just make sure not to click on any links and now delete the email

  • I'm getting the same ones several times a week and can't figure out the point. I get more fake emails from ebay and paypal than I do real ones. I guess if you respond to it, they would have your email address, but from there I'm not sure of the point.

These are spams designed to look like eBay item emails... I am on a Mac (less fear of viruses), so I clicked on the item link and it brings you to a website that has nothing to do with eBay... I didn't stay on it long enough to find out what it was... it's really an issue of fraud I suppose... someone should notify eBay that spammers are spoofing their correspondence in order to trick people into clicking on the link.

i couldn't figure out the point of those thing either. but i didn't realize there was a link attached. that makes more sense, because a lot of websites pay per hit. so if they can get people to click on the links there's money to be made.
