Phil Ortega

Last fall, this thread was started regarding missing major leaguers. In it I said I knew a guy in Vegas who works in a casino there, who claims to have run into Phil. I knew the guy from a fantasy football league, but I hadn't talked to him in a year and was having trouble running him down to get more info.
Well, after more digging, I came up with the guy's email from another friend from the league (who found it accidentally on a CC of an old email). Anyway, I dropped him a line and asked what the deal was with Ortega. I guess he saw him several times after that, right up to the point where he stopped working at that casino. The guy sold bets on horse races, and the casino where he worked was the El Cortez in downtown LV. I guess he came in often enough that they would speak of baseball, but that Ortega was often drunk when he showed up. However the last contact with him was late in 2002, so it's probably been a year and a half. Who knows if he's still there, or around.
I know TheBobs and Jim Crandell wanted me to follow up, and I've been working on it on and off here trying to dig up the email. If the two of you know people who research such matters, that's all the info that I could come up with. But hey, maybe a trip to the El Cortez the next time you're in Vegas might turn up something. Might not, but there it is.
