There is no generally recognized poor man's variety of the SD '70-S.

They might be referring to what was once called a medium date. This is
    now considered a large date.

I've never heard of such a variety, but it is in an ad in C.W pg.33 of March 15 included in a '59-04 set.

Considering the ad was from Chattanooga Coin which is linked with PCI grading I can only imagine what kind of hype they are trying to promote with that statement about the 1970S. The only "poorman's" version I ever heard of is the 1955 Lincoln cent. Steveimage

Steve - Donn't know if it is listed but I have a very strong 1953 PM DD. Looks as good as any '55 I've seen.

Probly worth 15-20 cents in 65.

The 1970S "poor man's small date" is nothing but hype. It is an overpriced large date.

All of the "poor man's double die" coins are hype. They are not listed in any guide because they are normal coins struck with very harshly worn dies. I know of examples in at least ten different years. The ONLY reason the 1955 gets any attention at all is because they have been sold for years as such and have become a traditional collection conversation piece like modern made 1883 racketeer nickels.

Sounds like they are using it as a "catch-all" term to refer to a less expensive (but still overpriced and overhyped) substitute for a more expensive variety. I don't care for that too much. As Steve and coppercoins posted, the only coin that should be given that designation is the 1955 cent. image
