question for the investors

last year i started buying psa 10s of one of my favorite players- mainly b/c he's 1 of my favorite players, but also b/c i looked at the cards as an investment. at the time, psa 10s were going for quite cheap on most of his rcs. now they've roughly increased 2-3x. assuming this player has a season that rivals his past 15 seasons, he'll likely reach a major milestone this year. he's also playing for what's projected to be one of the top contending teams.

knowing that, would you hold the cards or cash out now? why/why not?

  • Personally, if you want my opinion, it would def. depend on the profit margin involved. If you are talking about $10-20 then no. It would be better for me to have cards of my favorite player. If the margin is considerably more $50-100+ then yes. This price increase could be a fluke and lead to a great gain and a chance to pick them up in the future for the original price you paid.

Never a bad idea to cash in on a player when he is hot. Lord knows it always come back to normal after some time.

Just my opinion though, take it for what it cost you.
Move along folks.......Nothing to see here.
  • The profit margin on some of the RCs is as little as $50+ (lower end/mass produced RCs). The profit margin on the higher end RCs is $100-200+. Right now, I’m inclined to hold them simply b/c he’s my favorite player, I don’t have a huge $ crunch right now, it’s very likely he’ll reach this “landmark” (which is comparable to the 500HR landmark) this season, etc. If it were an unproven Rookie, I’d take my $ and cash out…but this player’s been in the majors for 17 years, has won multiple awards, and in the past 15/16 seasons, he’s had seasons that would enable him to pass the “landmark” this year and have room to spare. Also, I have multiple PSA 10s (and countless raw examples) of this player, and would keep at least 1 PSA 10 RC (of each RC) for my personal collection...that to me is far more valuable than $.

I'd sell your Maddux cards about 2 weeks before he gets to 300 wins. Keep a couple of the best if you'd like, but you'll be able to buy most of them back for far less a year from now.

No such details will spoil my plans...
  • thanks joe...that's my instinct, but i also don't want to be having a "fire sale" if he doesn't make 300. i've already chosen a few to keep (what i feel are the "best" of the PSA 10s I have)- my cost on those was quite low, so i don't mind holding them- i'll make a nice profit on what I sell.

if only i had picked up more of the 87 tiffanys/donrusses last year (i kept getting sniped at the last minute on most of them).
  • if you're talking about GM, sell em. there will always be ample supply and you'll undoubtedly be able to buy em back at the original price after his 300th
