Not the average BST item - a new Lincoln cent book.

I hope not too many mind this, but it's really important to me to get the word out on this.

I have finally decided to write and publish a book on Lincoln cents. Since the publication of a numismatic book isn't an every day occurrence especially among board members, I didn't think you folks would mind my plugging it here. It will go to press next month, and I am taking pre-press orders on the book for those who want to ensure they get one of the 500 copies in the first printing.

Please see my BST post for more information...and thanks to those who don't get the flame torches out.

If when you order the book you ask to have it signed, I will happily oblige. No problem.

I actually started the content of the book a couple of months ago, but was unsure whether to publish it. I received a call last month to do some Lincoln cent seminars at the upcoming Oklahoma Numismatic Association show in OKC, and figured on writing a couple of pamphlets on what I was going to be speaking about. After a few days of thought, I decided to go ahead and drum out this book and publish it before the show so I could have it available for the people who attend the seminar.

The book is about all the nuances in different years of Lincoln cents, such as the fact that the VDB initials take on different appearances from die to die on 1909 cents - because they weren't all hubbed from a single master, the existence of shadow doubling on 1943 cents, the large and small date 1974 cents, the large number of distended hub doubled dies that exist in certain years, and many other things that either take the purchase of many other books to learn or the experience of having seen millions of Lincolns through a scope to know. My experiences in a nutshell, combined with the most frequently asked questions about Lincoln answered within the covers of a roughly 200 page book.

I also get into explaining the most efficient method I have learned regarding sorting large groups of coins by date and mintmark, and that it's better to sort by date and mintmark before searching through them, to get your eyes accustomed to seeing the same thing over and over so it's easier to pick something out that's "different."

Inside the book is also a coupon good for a discount on the full Lincoln cent attribution guide that I will begin publishing this summer. This book will be an overall 2,500 page complete Lincoln cent reference that will be loose leaf published so you can assemble it yourself in a binder. The two main advantages of that will be that I can release it in parts so I can write it as it's published, and so that the cost of the entire book is spread out over a long period of time for those who wish to purchase it. Publishing in this manner also holds down binding cost to make it less expensive to publish and purchase, and affords the opportunity to add more information to the book later so it will never be out of date.

It will be offered in "packets" of 100 pages each bi-monthly, and will be available on an annual subscription rate just like a magazine. Since the book will be a die attribution guide and the method of publication lends to having one page per known die, the backs of the pages will be reserved for dealer and collector advertising which will be sold for as little as $8 per insertion including artwork and setup...basically cheap enough that if collectors wanted to have their email address in a permanent book, they could easily afford it.

I hope this manifesto answers your questions regarding the method behind my madness. Believe me, this isn't a "tossed together" effort. I started in on this idea years ago, and just last month began to put the pieces I've been holding for a long time together into a cohesive unit that's well worth the cover price. I have been told by the people I have confided in regarding the contents of the book that I am selling it too cheaply...I beg to differ. I think a lot of the numismatic books out there are too expensive.

    Thanks Steve..

I also need to add that if any dealers are interested in carrying copies of this book for sale to their customers, please contact me. I have a discounted price set up for orders of 10 copies or more that will offer a good opportunity for some profit.
