question for clipped planchet collectors

BigAlBigAl Posts: 1,187 ✭✭✭

came across an 1827 large cent (nice original coin in Fine condition) that was clipped at the top, was wondering if this is a fairly common occurrence....or if something like this would command any premium, and if so how much?

thanks in advance for any help,

Al

Small clips (<10%) are not too rare on the large cents up till around the introduction of the steam press. Even after that you will still see rim clips on occasion. Larger clips (10% or more) are rare. For some reason 1795 seems to be the most commonly encountered clipped cent.

Conder gave you pretty much the same answer I would (and thanks for the endorsement, shamika!). Here's a related thread about a clipped 1818 cent I recently acquired, as well as an eBay auction for a rim-clipped 1817 cent which didn't realize any premium for the error. An error collector might offer a slight premium for it, while a large cent collector might knock off a little value.

We're also assuming this is a Mint error and not damage. A couple of things you can check - the rim of the coin should taper toward the clip on either side, almost as if the clip was a drain and the metal was pouring down it. Depending on the amount of wear and the size of the clip, there rim directly opposite could look slightly thin or weak. If you have a decent picture I can tell you with about 95% certainty what you have.
