Why hasn't the 94-P Morgan gotten it's respect...

in popularity and pricing as their cousins, the CCs? Is the mintage understated or many were saved? Is it the Rodney Dangerfield of Morgans?

  • I had a bear of a time finding a nice 94-P...ended up with an EF 40 because it's all I could afford.
CCs just seem to have that mystique...I think a lot of folks now are jumping into coins for investments, and the CC Morgan has a certain degree of familiarity

I like the 94p, it's a tough one to get a hold of.

    Larry -

I didn't know Kobe and Shaq were coin collectors/investorsimage

But you do have a point. At one time Jerry Buss had a large coin collection. Maybe he cornered all the 94-Psimage

The 94 is tough to find problem free, even in the higher circulated grades. As far as why it isn't priced like some of the tougher CCs, the difference is in the demand for them. Not many of us are crazy enough to try to complete a Morgan set, but there are a lot of collectors who don't normally mess with Morgans that want a CC. Short answer: Demand.

I just sold a very nice problem free xf40. I have not seen one in years in high grade. DOesn;t mean they aren't out there, but they haven't been around me.

94s is also a tough coin, as I looked for a couple of years for a decent one.

I don know folks, but here recently it is getting a lot more respect, as the price on this date has about doubled in past year in select grades:

I was looking for pops on Morgan proofs and found this sitecoinfactsI was amazed by their note on the 94. "not as rare as the mintage suggests" ? There were less than 111,000 of these minted. I may be wrong, but I think that makes them pretty darn rare, and tough to find. Seems to me any Morgan with mintage numbers under about 3 million are tough to find in nice grades without really high prices. Actually the only coin I ever cracked was a 94 in an ACG holder. Still have the holder, it was kind of fun!!!image

    KKing,

I've been wondering the same for about a year now myself.

I just think it hasn't been hyped; compare it to the 89cc in mintage and recent price increases....makes absolutely no sense!

it's only a matter of time though......

  • the 1894-p was the second to last morgan I found to complete my AU-U morgan collection.
(1895-p excluded and an acceptable VG 93-s).
I found a really nicely detailed AU but settled for a "dipped" example.
I think you make a good observation and a think the lure of the CC's is hard
    to overcome.

Well the survival rate is definitely higher than for the 93-S. I just recently sold a fairly nice au50 on eBay. It lasted a tad over half a day and I thought the price would scare most bidders away. If yer feeling spendy there are two PCGS ms63's sittin over at www.steveestes.com at $4450 a pop. Its a date that is definitely seeing some demand here in the last few months as are many semi-key and better date Morgans.
