2004 UK 5 Pound Commemorative - picture added

A new five pound commemorative coin is scheduled to be released the 15th March. It is the Entente Cordiale commemorative coin celebrating the centenary of the Anglo French pact, depicting Brittania and Marianne with a face value of £5. So far, nothing on the BRM web site.

Photos of this coin, depicting the reverse design have already started to appear in some areas of the UK national press, as ads for advance orders. The reverse of the coin was designed by David Gentleman and bears a portrait of the conjoined female icons Britannia and Marianne, one is "upside down" to the other, and the reverse inscription is Entente Cordiale 1904-2004, the edge is milled and the obverse is the current QE II bust designed by Ian Rank-Broadley.

I am curious to see this coin with Britannia and Marianne. Any of our UK members have a picture they can scan and post for us? TIA image

For the commem crowns, they issue a silver version. If it is also a circulating commem, they will have BU and proof cupro-nickel versions, as well. image

  • Would it be a good idea to wait for the secondary market on this one?

Sounds interesting! Could be a great design, but I can also see how it could turn out looking like tripe.

I'm so confusedimage I want one of those commemoratives too. The BRM is sold out but that link of Trozau's earlier in the thread for Westminsters has them, Crown & Piedfort gold & Plat. & Silver I'm sure they're a bit more but they got um. Does the link have a sarcastic meaning? I wanted to get some of those Brittannias' too! The ones with the graceful lady not the bonnett. Some of those Brit coins I've been checkin out at the BRM are really pricie for the weight ya get. What up with that? Torzau, your icon coin is awsome! I'd get a bunch of those n Silver if I could!

    Jack,

I have a feeling that the BRM is not ready to sell the Entente Cordiale in the US yet and that is why they are coming up as sold out (Even in the UK site, they are only selling the BU copper nickel). Give it some time (about a month). You are right about the BRM issue prices being high. Always better to wait for the secondary market. For Britannias in silver, a forum member silvereaglecoins sell them. Here's a link to their web site. image

  • I know what you mean about the BRM website, the base metal versions of the new 5 pound seem to have sold out as soon as they were issued, the website still says updated 8th March so I guess that is when they sold out - seems very surprising in on eday though! I have emailed Westminster Mint to ask if they have the base metal versions and will keep this list informed.

As for the Britannias - the royal mint just seems to command whatever price it wants. I bought 2002, 2003 and 2004 through the mint and received excellent quality coins and I have been lucky picking up the other through ebay, I can't recall getting any problems with any of them. The regular ones are very high priced for bullion but it's the (low mintage) proofs that really catch the eye.

Torzau Thanks so very much for the scoop & the link! image I'm headin out tomorrow to pick up a couple of Lb'ers I've comitted to. Should be fun as I've only done business by phone thus far. I'll check to see if they have some of thos Britannias as well & possibly bulk up my order to get out of paying Ca. Sales Tax. If not I'll head over to the link you referenced.
Secondly, I'm not sure if I should thank you or hate you as I followed your link to your site & saw the 81' Proof UK 5er. What a beautiful coin! I gotta get one of those too....Oh geez.....Here I go again

    Thanks again
