What I think are the most important US coins:

    Chain cent-the first US coin

Saint-Gaudens $20- beautiful, the largest denomination struck for circulation

Lincoln cent- the most widely collected coin, and the first circulating coin to depict a famous person

Morgan dollar- a very popular coin due to Uncirculated coins being cheap for that era

1804 dollar- the first million dollar coin

Buffalo nickel- a very "American" design

Standing quarter- a very beautiful design

Walking half- also a very beautiful design

1913 Liberty nickel- one of the most valuable coins, perhaps second only to the 1804 dollar

1836 reeded edge half- the first made with steam power and a closed collar

Wonderful presentation Donovan. I haven't expanded my horizons into world coins yet so my list is limited to U.S. coins:

    1. 1794 Flowing Hair Dollar
    2. 1870 $3
    3. 1825/4 Half Eagle
    4. 1849 Double Eagle
    5. 1792 Half Disme
    6. 1933 Saint Double Eagle
    7. 1795 Half Eagle (small eagle reverse)
    8. 1795 Eagle (13 Leaf)
    9. 1879 Flowing Hair Stella
    10. 1907 Saint Eagle (Rolled Edge)

Yep! I was thinking the same thing.

I really can't limit myself to 10. I really enjoy so many different coins, it's hard to choose just 10.

I do agree with the post (overall), but personally, I would choose hundreds, from many different countries.

Well a couple of reasons. First, being of European descent, my point of view is eurocentric, which isn't a bad thing, but my point of view may not allow me to fully appreciate the coinage of the far east and any impact it may have had on world history. I do know this, Europen coinage readily circulated in the far east but their coinage did not circulate in Europe so I believe my conclusion is valid that certain European coinage had more of an impact on world commerce than far east coinage did. I did consider Chinese cash coins and if I expanded my list to 20, they would probably be on it, as well as Islamic dinars and dirhams.

    From the dark side version:

<< <i> Here's my list in chronological order. My emphasis was on the actual function of money and I realize some are not specific as to a particular date. What would your list contain and why?
    >>

I definitely agree that "actual function as money" is an important criterion for
determining a coin's importance. This might be defined as:

1- -The total value of all the goods and services purchased with the coin.

2- -The number of people who actually used the coin at some point in time.

&3- -The lenght of time the coin circulated.

On this basis the US clad quarter probably deserves a place on the list. Granted
there are also other criteria in determining importance and the quarter is not as
    important on other scales.

Some twenty trillion dollars worth of goods and services have been purchased with the
US clad quarter since its introduction in November, 1965. This is far and away the most for
any coin ever produced. Only the Lincoln cent can challenge it yet falls far short. The coin
has been in constant circulation for nearly thirty years and has been used by some three
hundred and eighty million people in several countries and territories during this time. It
has been the largest circulating coin and the sole representative of the denomination for
over thirty years. It has served the largest and most advanced economy in the world and
spanned several generations of users. It has stood up well to the ravages of use and many
of even the oldest dates still circulate freely.
