1986 Topps Gwynn PSA 9 goes for $67!

Current pop is only 4 with no 10s.

This is one I need for my Gwynn set... needless to say, I didn't expect bidding to get this out of hand!

I'm hoping with the recent special that more will eventually show up!

It is definitely a tough set... if it makes you feel any better, I paid about $75 for a PSA 9 Nolan Ryan about 18 months ago... hated it at the time, but I've not seen another come up since.

The 86 set is tough. I submitted 28 Schmidt's, and received one PSA 9.

Neal -- I'm still very thankful on that one. Will you be interested in one if I get one from PSA? If so -- it's your at whatever I paid you way back when (don't recall specifically if it was a trade or a cash deal...)

Steve -- believe it or not, because of the superior printing techniques, the Tiffany is much, much easier to find in top grade than the regular version. Just a more limited print run....

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • Steve (sdsportsfan), the Tiffany version is actually a lot easier to get in PSA 9 or 10. It's the regular version that had a lot more problems with chipping.

Gator5, I'll stick to trying to find them in graded form for now - that way, it's a sure thing. Thanks though!
  • sorry meant to put in previous post that tiffany is definetly easier i have a henderson for sale right now thanks.image to view click on link in previous post

Onegaucho - I broke down three 6 box rack cases. Sent in 4 nice Gwynns the end of last month. So we'll see.

Conforti - that was my Ryan! image It's a high end 9 too, at least I think so. Nice even 50/50 all around.

    Steve;

Thanks for a great card! In talking to other Ryan collectors lately, I have come to fell I truly got a bargain because I am the only one who has one in a 9! I bet if you get another one, you'll easily get $150+ for it... in fact, I know one guy on the registry who'll pay if you have it...

    Thanks again!

I sent in 2...they're borderline. We'll see. The black borders are perfect but both are between 55/45 and 60/40.

Conforti - that Ryan came from a three box rack case I bought. I submitted a whopping three cards from it. At least that was one of them.
  • purelyPSA, keep me posted! I'm hoping other 86 Gwynns were sent in during the last special...

86 is brutal! I've been looking for a Trammell card in a 9 for quite awhile. I haven't gotten to the point of buying boxes...yet

Jim - knowing there are two rabid Trammell fans on here, I sent in two of those too. They're nice, at least one of them should 9. Sit tight. The order still isn't checked in yet (rec'd 3/1) so it might be a while.

You misunderstood, I said I'll have one coming back from psa soon and I'm pretty confident it'll 9.

  • Gator5 - then by all means, ring me up when that 9 (or 10?!) image comes back! Thanks!!

  • Hi Keith,

Your not the only one with an 86 Topps Ryan PSA 9, as there are two of them and I have the other. Had to go through 2 Wax Boxes, 3 Vending Boxes, and several raw Ryan card purchases to get enough of a selection. Sent in 8 or 9 of the best 86 Topps Ryan's and got one PSA 9, 6 or 7 PSA 8's and a PSA 8 OC. Some of the PSA 8's I sold went for between $12 and $24.

Anyone looking for a player from this year just let me know and I will see if I have any good ones, Clemens is the only one that I know for a fact that I don't have any good ones of.

Man, that 86 Ryan is tough! That's alot of material to net one mint card! I had forgotten that you had one too... you got yours graded not long after I got mine by auction last year sometime... not too active with Ryans lately, are you still collecting him? If so, I just posted on the vintage board a bunch that I am trying to trade or sell. If anything interests you, I'd be happy to swap!

By the way, if yoou ever decide to part with your 85 Topps Mini... please let me know... if I remember, you have a PSA 9. I drool everytime I see your list!

    Thanks and take care!

To echo the comments on the pain of the 86 cards, I went through over 200 Younts and sent in the best 3 to only get 8s. I sent in the best tiffany of the same card out of 5 and it received a 10. The black borders are very difficult. The only 10s I have received from the regular issue are the Rose special cards that have no black border.

  • Keith;

Right now its just not practical for me to buy anything, at least until I can secure a paying gig. If it comes down to the dismantling of my Ryan sets, I will give you first dibs on anything you want.

I miss our competition from last year, if I wouldn't have gotten canned in August I might have given you a tough run for the 2003 Awards on the Ryan Master and Topps sets. I still have like 250 raw Ryan cards sitting in Card Savers all ready for grading, but no money to send them in.

I couldn't believe what the 75 OPC Ryan PSA 9 went for the other day. Its running as expensive as its Topps counterpart now.

  • So what do you guys think is the best way to get 9s? Rack packs?

I'm guessing cellos and wax packs are gonna do damage to the borders.

    Scott;

Sorry to hear that you got laid off... I hope you get back on your feet soon!

We had some fun last minute runoffs! You drained my bankroll for a while! I'll never forget that 1970 Topps Playoff in PSA 9!!! If memeory serves, you did pretty well with the next one that came up.

But, honestly, right now, it's pretty tough... there is a whole new crew of bloodthirsty Ryan collectors that have popped up in the last 2 months... any PSA 10 is going for ga-ga money at the moment (90 Classic $80, 88 Tiffany RB $90, 89 Score Traded $45, 83 OPC $300 (x2))... you are smart sitting on the sidelines for the time being! I can't come close to keeping up.

    Hang in there!

  • Onegaucho,

I believe the best Ryans that I got came from the vending boxes that I had. The packs tended to have bad corners, which is the kiss of death with PSA. The cello pack were worse because the stuck the damn gum in the middle of the pack, which bent both halves and ruined corners. The vending boxes you had to hope that the card wasn't near either end as, at least the vending boxes I had, seemed to be overstuffed, which smashed the end cards.

All I can say is stay away from vending ... an entire case yielded about a dozen cards worthy of a second round of scutiny. After that, I think 2 actually got sent it (but at least got 9s).

  • Anyone have experience with opening rack packs from 86?

I have a few from 85 (for Gwynns) and they look like they're in great shape... no gum, staining, etc. to get in the way.

    Here's my take.

Racks are really the best way to go. If you want 9s, you need nice rack boxes that have not been messed with - I mean the packs themselves have not been handled much, because those cards will chip with the lightest of touches. I bought 2 6 box cases and 2 3 box cases for my latest submission (I think I submitted 90 or so cards). And for heaven's sake, be tough. For six bucks a card, you can really screw yourself submitting 8s that won't sell for 2.99. Don't bother buying racks with stars on top and expecting them to grade at all either.

The cards themselves are potluck...you can get nice cut cards of some players but not others - that usually holds true for the whole case. Then the next case you might get some different players that are cut nice. Weird. This is why I wound up with 4 Gwynns, 4 Seavers, and none of a lot of other stars. Ripken seems to be strong the whole way across - don't ask me why.

Centering is all over the place. And it sucks. I'd say over half the cards in each case are already disqualified for 9s right out of the chute due to this (or at least this has been my experience).

There's always card dust and fragments on the faces of them. Be careful when you're brushing them off of the black border at the top - I've chipped some nice cards this way.image

JMHO, but unless you're feeling lucky, I doubt I'd go searching through boxes looking for one card. Just decide what you'll pay, and wait. There's tons of this stuff, but the cards will only be a trickle due to the hassles involved in getting 9s. But they'll eventually appear.

BTW, last count had 37 8s for Ryan and 2 9s.

Joker - Knowing there are some serious Phils collectors out there, I submitted about a dozen common Phils from '86 that should garner 9s and another couple of them that are borderline. Samuel, Von Hayes, Glenn Wilson, and about 10 or so others.

I just recieed my 1986 in the mail. I am happy to pay 30.00 for it. Centering is nice 54 46 left to right 55 45 to to bottom the black edges are nice. 67 Seems ok for a 9 if a Boggs sold for 30 Gwynn is usualy 2x Boggs. I have said it many times 86's are brutal.

Are there any chips at all on the top or side black borders?
  • boggs301012boggs301012 Posts: 1,135 ✭✭
Nope no chips. A little wear on the bottom edge of the card in one area.

    Purely,

I couldn't say it any better. Imo clemens and ripken are the easiest the card that is escaping me is the brett and carew. I've been through 3-6 boxes cases and I'm not going to blow anything up by no means.

I bought three rack boxes 1 was special about a 1/3 of the cards are easy 8 's with a 1/3 of that a strong shot at 9's. Even 4 or 5 cards with a shot a 10's. To bad I dont collect Tony Perez or Kirby Puckett etc.... I might send them in sometime later this year. To open or not? I say open it cards in wrappers are ugly.........image
