Are the 2002 Donruss the Rookies AUTO Nicknames 1/1's?

Just came across this Adam LaRoche 2002 Donruss Elite AUTO and this is now the third "Nickname AUTO" I have seen from this set. I also saw a Mark Teixeira 2002 Donruss the Rookies Phenoms with the AUTO simply stating "Tex" as well as a Sean Burroughs 2002 Donruss the Rookies Phenoms with the AUTO stating "Burf #21". Oddly enough I owned the Burf AUTO. Anyways, does anyone have any info or have the time to contact Donruss/Playoff and ask them. I'm very interested in figuring this one out. I'll try to uplaod the scan of the Burf.

Could it be possible that this is a buy back of some sorts or maybe a card released later than 2002? I think
the whole nickname signature started in 2003. Certainly not a 1/1 unless DP numbered it that way

I have 2 2002 Donruss Elite Die Cut cards from the Rookies -- Josh Bard, signed, BARDO - both 2/1000 and 4/1000 are like this.

  • No Joe, the Burroughs was definately from a box of 2002 Donruss the Rookies. As for the LaRoche, the 2003 Donruss Elite Recollection Collection AUTO's were not band-aid AUTO's they were actually signed on the card and numbered to 25. I actually had a LaRoche 03 Recollection, not Die-Cut and no band-aid, sold it for $100 a few weeks after buying it for $30.

When you've got a big stack of cards, or stickers in this case, to sign, I imagine anyone would get a little bored and start adding things or signing differently. Either that, or the player's are hobby-savvy and did it to create a little interest in their cards. From what I understand, that's why Reggie Jackson (a big collector himself), signed his 1997 Significant Signature cards in 3 different inks. I doubt Donruss CS reps would know about it. They produce tens of thousands of cards each year, and whenever I called, the CSRs just read off the marketing materials. They could very well be 1/1s, or 1/2s, or whatever, but I don't think Donruss could confirm it, especially 18 months later.

  • they're not technically 1/1s (which to me are #d as such- though that's open to debate on products like Diamond King)...beckett usually has stories about this and recently had 1 awhile back (can't recall which cards it pertained to, but it was indicating variations similar to yours as well as players signing their birthdate on the #d cards that matched...other variations were players making their college logo, referencing # of HRs, etc.). also, i have a palmeiro donruss signature auto where he put "500 HR" next to his name- on another (raffy's my favorite player, so i own multiple autos of him) he put "#25". best bet is to ask beckett/see if they have an article on it.
  • I own a Henri Stanley auto that might be considered a 'nickname', although it really isn't. The autos I've seen on eBay say "Houston Astros" beneath his signature, but mine says "Astros Prospect" on it.

Proudly buying your rookie cards since 1987.
  • Mike, you have too much damn money. Hopefully you still have some left for my auctions, or are you boycotting my cards because of the whole Dontrelle thing?

  • LOL Jason....I went looking at your auctions after I saw you post on Rios or LaRoche and couldn't find the card.

Geez....I'm still sitting on more Dontrelle's than you could fill a container ship, hoping he would get off to a fast Spring Training. Reading the boxscores, he is still getting strikeouts , but also alowing too many walks which he didn't do until the end of last season.

I do not hold you responsible for my foibles, you can be sure of that. Dontrelle was an accelerated learning curve for me and followed in the footsteps of previous rookie obsessions which started with JD Drew in '98 Leaf R&S ( of course, now, four years later he is showing promise again ), went to Pat "The Bat" Burrell in '99 ( I see a pattern here ) and of course, Dontrelle all summer.

On the flip side, the Rios and LaRoche amortized over the cost of all purchases and which are being graded as we speak are still viable. I love Cole Hamels and he will move to my sig line Monday as a certain character Mr. Newman portrays moves into my author icon. Cole looks like the real deal, but seasons aren't made by striking out Jeter and AROD in an exhibition game or getting homered on by Giles tonight...the long A to AA season he will be in this year will tell me if the 20% of all Gold BC refractors I own of him are worth the investment.

As for tonights' LaRoche, I sure hope its a 1/1 and that he does well all season...as long as it isn't against those Phightin Phils !
