Raleigh Yesterday

I attended a Coin Show in Raleigh yesterday. It was my first. Got to see many very nice coins. Me and my wife were on a quest to find Mercury Dimes for her circulated set she has been working on. She now has a complete set except for the 16D and the 42/1, but she still has some upgrading to do on about 10 others to get the set to be evenly matched. I picked up a few odds and ends that caught my eye, nothing overly exciting though, just a few nice proof coins, a barber dime, a seated liberty dime, a couple of error coins, an interesting looking toned Morgan I "rescued" from a junk bin and a few others. I did pick up a "modern" Hobo Nickel. It was supposedly carved by Frank Brazzel, according to the gentleman who I purchased it from. Attached is a pic if anyone is interested.

    MrSpud,

Missed the show, but do occasionally make it. Based on your post count, I'd imagine you might not know all the NC guys on the board, but there are quite a few. If you head my direction, drop me a PM and I'll buy you a coffee.image

Most of the slabbed coins I saw were PCGS and NGC. I remember one vendor that had some PCI ones mixed in with raw coins and another vendor that had a bunch of those ones like Numitrust and SGS. I also remember seeing a few stray ones from companies I never heard of. I overheard the vendor with the SGS and Numitrust slabs telling someone what the difference was between the different certification companies. He came right out and said that PCGS, NGC and ANACS were the big three and that the others were not as well accepted, but all he seemed to be selling were slabbed coins not from the big three.

  • I decided at the last minute to go head over to the Raleigh Show (across town) on Sunday. I had about
$30.00 in cash and a red hot Credit Card. When I got there, only two tables took Credit Cards and they had nothing I wanted. I bought a 1966 set of Irish coins for $15.00 (did I say that outloud....lol).

It continues to amaze me that more dealers do not take credit cards for us impulse buyers (by the time I get to an ATM the impulse is gone). If I had found something I wanted I would have paid a little more to cover the extra cost.

It makes me think that many dealers do not want a record of sales (no record, no taxes). image

I guess I will have to plan better next time (which will be in June, I think).
